James Gunn Teases Minor Superman Tweaks Following First Test Screenings

DC Studios founders, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are here to reboot the DC Universe. They had been absolutely clear that they do not want Robert Pattinson as their new Batman as he would only be cast in Matt Reeves The Batman II. That is a separate verse altogether.

And yes, as a matter of fact, their first attempt to reboot is Superman. James Gunn teases minor Superman tweaks after the initial test screenings. The filmmakers and the fans are equally excited and nervous for the first release of the DC Universe reboot this year.

Superman with David Corenswet debut

Henry Cavill has been replaced with the new Superman, surely for reboot purposes. The teaser is here, and people had positive feelings about it.

Here it is:

Before its July 11 release, the film is in the editing process. Principal photography has already wrapped last year, according to Movie Web. However, James Gunn revealed that the first test screenings are done.

Gunn told, “We’ve done screenings. Definitely learning stuff all the time, definitely editing and making little changes.”

Minor editing and reshoots are a normal part of the filmmaking process, but with the history of DCEU’s (DC Extended Universe) extensive reshoots regarding Justice League, fans are apprehensive.

The teaser revealed key characters like Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion), Mr. Terrific (played by Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (played by Isabela Merced), and Krypto the superdog.

What changes is James Gunn making to Superman after the first test screenings?

James Gunn assured fans that there won’t be major changes and only a “couple little, tiny things”. Small alterations would be enough to give the film a go-ahead before the final theatrical release.

He explained to Movie Web that mere additional photography was such a hard work, and reworking on the entire movie would be a hassle.

Therefore, it is not possible to film it all over again following the test screenings. Rather, the small tweaks here and there should solve the problem after all.

This would help in shaping the next trailer for Superman, things have been crazy after the teaser was dropped.  Fans were excited as some of them said the Corenswet nailed the look while the others can’t wait to see the authentic comic book-y version of Superman.

Peter Safran confirmed that the teaser was just a sneak peek to the full-length trailer that is soon to be released.

How will James Gunn’s Superman differ from previous portrayals of the character?

Previously, James Gunn indicated that Creature Commandos marks the beginning of the DC reboot, but with Superman, a novel cinematic experience would be offered to the fans, cited by Comic Book Resource

Superman is expected to raise the bar when it comes to chronicling superhero narratives. His rise from working for The Daily Planet to becoming Man of Steel is the real ‘full course meal’ that Gunn is going to start with.

It is the first of the five resets in the DCU film lineup. The other films enlisted are Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, and Swamp Thing

Is the new Superman focused on a younger version of the character?

Having explained how James Gunn’s Superman will be different from previous portrayals, it is predicted that the new Superman movie could feature a younger version of Clark Kent.

As his discovery of his own self originating from The Daily Planet journalist to becoming a powerful superhero, it is anticipated that the new Superman will commence from his younger self, probably.

Fans are eager to know if this is true, but no confirmation from Gunn and Safron is here yet.

First reviews after test screenings

And the reviews are here! The first audience to experience the screening has the rumors out. And the reactions are mixed.

Superman is edging closer to flying into the theatres. Some of the close sources of Jeff Sneider spoke that an insider declared the movie to be “terrible”, as per The Direct

On the other hand, the YouTube show “The John Campea Show” learned the “exact opposite” about the movie, and it is “tremendously good”.

Why Gunn teases minor Superman tweaks after test screenings? Because of social listening?

What is social listening, you might be wondering. According to research, social listening is monitoring of digital conversation to see the reactions of fans, audience or general public about a brand, company or industry.

It is a perfect way of gauging how the audience perceives your brand, and that is what teasers and trailers are doing these days. Film marketing has become novel in modern times of technology. And this is where filmmakers are capitalizing on social listening from movie trailers and teasers, observed to be directly proportional to instigating emotional responses of the viewers.

According to The New York Times, Hollywood filmmakers have been using social media to check viewers’ responses soon after the trailer is released. Since the article is dated back to 2014, it was then used to predict ticket sales a month before the time when the trailers were released back then.

These days, teaser release is the ‘new’ thing- a critical part of promotional campaign. A teaser is sometimes released a year before the actual film release, in which mostly the final release date is not yet revealed. Casting news keeps coming in to generate hype, get initial reactions from the fans, instigate emotional enegagment, create interest and anciticipation after grabbing attention from the crowd.

As soon as the teaser is released on YouTube today, the fans zoom into the comments section and pour their hearts out. This is where social listening comes in to play its part.

Although Superman’s teaser has earned positive expectations from the general audience, Gunn still wants to make it perfect as it is his first crucial reboot film in the DCEU. And that is why test screenings are here to save the day.

Though, the reviews are not openly shared on social media platform from the initial screenings, the inside news are shared from undisclosed sources about how they felt about the movie.

Intriguingly, there are mixed reviews after the first test screening. Gunn ensures that the changes will be minor as he wants to keep Superman’s narrative true to the comics.

Superman is slated for release on July 11, 2025.  Are you excited? Would love to hear from you!
