The Dutch themes are manifested in the trailer that goes on to unravel a chilling turn when Nancy and her friend (Gael Garcia Bernal) share a secret that shouldn’t be out. Their dark secrets turn their lives upside down.

Director’s Vision for Holland

Holland’s director, Mimi Cave, has previously given us films like Fresh (2022) and Vessel (2015). She was approached with a screenplay by Andrew Sodorski, based on Variety’s reports.

She had been living in Chicago suburbs, which makes her familiarity with Michigan’s settings for the film, quite strong. When she was in the middle of editing Fresh, the project came to Cave, she disclosed to Variety.

In an interview with The AV Club, Cave admitted that she felt connected with the script as soon as she read it. The script was roaming around Hollywood for quite a while but as soon as it reached Cave’s hands, she felt close with the characters due to her connections with the small town of Michigan.

She further clarified that with this film, she wanted to show how, at one moment, a place could be a person’s safe zone, while at the very next moment, it could be all a dream and “can be stripped away”.

When asked about how she marries the everyday little things like that Tulip flooded grounds of Michigan in Holland with something so dark, she answered that everything in everyday life is already there; you just have to find the “cracks”.

In Holland, the town looks “colorful, perfect” but the cracks are still there. This is where Cave took advantage of creating a thrilling narrative and turned things around for the audience to see for themselves soon after it is released worldwide.

She even quoted that she used her own childhood experiences of living in that town, even designing wallpaper after wallpaper of the home where shooting took place, bringing back the memories of the 2000s when she herself was a high-schooler, to bring the true essence to the story’s narrative. She wanted everything in the frame to be “claustrophobic” with bright colors and aesthetics.

How was it working with Nicole Kidman in Holland?

Nicole Kidman is one of the producers of the film, via her company Blossom Films. Cave was all praise for Nicole Kidman since she has studied more scripts than any of the crew members. Cave said,

“As an actress, she’s very interested in what the director wants, so the moment we start shooting, she steps back from the producer role and really allows herself to be caught up in the actual role.” [Source]

We all know Kidman is a powerhouse of performance when it comes to playing her roles. This is the exact fact corroborated by Mimi Cave as well as she is physically, emotionally, and spiritually available in the character.

As soon as they move forward to the post-production stage, Nicole wears her producer shoes back on.

In the same interview with The AV Club, Cave also spilled the beans that since Nicole Kidman has worked with numerous directors before, she possesses a unique take on things. In their first meeting, Nicole was excited about Cave’s viewpoint and Cave thought she was just like a “unicorn”.

She elucidated that there is always a special bond between a female actor and a female director. Cave cited that since Nicole had watched her short films and liked her work, she was ready to take a chance on Cave, which Cave was very proud of. With such a big star in her cast, Cave got the opportunity to take a pivot more safely and try something big.

Cave testified that when Nicole is all in for a project, she is totally committed. Cave was happy that Kidman was more than ready to start working with her and loved her honesty with her work.

Nicole Kidman has been open about working in more female-directed films. Read details in Directorial Debut of Kate Winslet.

Nicole Kidman’s thoughts on working in Holland

While talking at the SXSW Film Festival premiere, she disclosed that it was great working with male actors of the crew, Gael Garcia Bernal and Matthew Macfadyen. She accredited them as the “good guys of the industry” since these are the men who support the female lead actor and the female director.

They become strong support for the females of the film crew and give their talent generously, which made it easier for Nicole to gel in well with both of them.

Expectations from Nicole Kidman’s Holland

Kidman’s Nancy is someone who believes everything is perfect in her perfect life in a perfect place, just like a typical small-town housewife. But Mimi Cave knows how and when to turn the tone of the story and that is when Nancy becomes apprehensive of her husband’s secrets but encounters something deeply unsettling, layer after layer.

When it comes to portraying dark intensifying madness on the screen, Nicole Kidman is the best choice and that is what Mimi Cave ensured while casting her. Kidman was a masterpiece in The Perfect Couple and Babygirl recently, which has set the audience’s expectations bar high.
