Have you seen AI getting personal and becoming a next-generation nightmare? Blumhouse Productions is ready to give us another heart-pounding AI thriller, Megan 2.0, or should we precisely put it as ‘M3GAN 2.0’.

Plot details of Megan 2.0
“Oops, I did it again” is what we hear playing in the trailer. What a banger they used for the trailer launch for M3gan 2.0– nothing could have matched the beat of the terrifying dancing doll, and we see what she did last time. The trailer gives glimpses of her past, too.
According to Nerdist, the official blurb of Megan 2.0 plot indicates that the sequel takes place two years after the AI doll Megan went bonkers and was ready to kill whoever came in her way. Megan’s creator, Gemma (played by Allison Williams), is now a high-profile author and gives her insights to the government about the insights into AI.
On the other hand, we see Gemma’s niece Cady now as a 14-year-old, slowly becoming a rebel against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Now Megan had one job: to protect Cady and for that, even if it meant fighting another villainous misused AI version known as Amelia (played by Ivanna Sakhno from Pacific Rim: Uprising). She is the ultimate killer spy who was stolen and exploited by a powerful defense contractor. The aims are not so good: the creation of a military-grade weapon whose only purpose apparently is ‘mass destruction’.
Gemma realizes the seriousness of the matter since the safety of the entire human existence is at risk. She decides to revive and resurrect Megan with a faster, stronger, and more lethal variant.

What is Megan 2.0 trailer about?
Okay, “This bitch vs. that bitch” is the ultimate catch of the trailer. When their paths collide, we know we are about to watch the most exciting upgrades of AI clash with each other.
Megan knows she was programmed to protect Cady, but she asks Amelia whether she would stand in her way. However, did we hear that right?
Megan asks Amelia to strike a deal…”You can kill Gemma but don’t touch Cady”. Now THAT is something!
When the trailer begins with “It’s so Hard to Say Goodbye” by Boyz II Men, we know that Megan cannot leave her past. She is still the meanest bitch who can go to any limit to protect Cady. We don’t know whether killing Gemma, as Cady as a teenager gets upset with Gemma’s controlling nature, is part of Megan’s plan.
Does this imply that Megan and Amelia might be conspiring against Gemma? Was this Megan’s plan to get out of her plastic teletubby body?
One more thing to note here: the trailer includes a dialogue from Megan, “One thing hasn’t changed- I will do WHATEVER it takes to protect Cady”. Get it? WHATEVER it takes! Now the Britney Spears song makes some sense here, eh? The killer instinct is still present in Megan.
Now, to get out that “plastic teletubby” body, Megan used her superlative intelligence for a plan, probably? Gemma promises to give her an upgrade if she behaves. There you go!
Also, Amelia’s self-awareness gradually reaches a peak, which makes her more independent and less inclined to take orders from humans or anyone around her. This could mean that she might not be interested in the deal after all, making her more destructive with each passing second.
These are all speculations and will be explained once the film is released. But our ardent pursuit of answers has got us into the guessing game, and we are loving it!

Director’s vision for the film
The director, Gerard Johnstone, is a huge fan of Mad Max– he disclosed this to The AU Review. He talked about doing sequels that “you shouldn’t feel cynical about”.
He was of the view that the way sequels work should make sense, just like Terminator 2. Similarly, he is a great defender of Mad Max 3 because there are sequels that need to outdo their predecessors. They have pressure to create above-par success metrics.
This time, he tried not to repeat Megan’s story. And for that, he had a plan.
“Let’s just take the character into a totally different space, and that was really exciting.” [Source]
He explained that when discussions were ongoing with James Wan (producer of The Monkey), he told Gerard that the story should be a robot worse than Megan’s. Gerard was on the same page with that idea as he thought it would be interesting to show a redemption story for Megan.
However, this would still leave the viewers thinking whether Megan’s loyalty is still with Cady, Gemma, or the rest of the AI bots, as striking the deal thing is quite shady.
Allison Williams on her role in M3gan 2.0
Allison Williams teased a bit about her role in Megan 2.0. ComingSoon.net cited that Allison spoke about how Gemma has been through a lot of things in part one. Now, “she has adjusted life accordingly”.
Gemma is now very straightforward in Megan 2.0 and likes to keep things real so that the audience can feel her experience and what she has been going through. When Megan was released, it was more about horror, and big reactions to things were inevitable.
Based on the type of role she is playing in Megan 2.0, we anticipate that she would be more serious and might be entirely focused on her work of updating Megan rather than giving reactions to the horror Megan creates.
When is M3gan 2.0 releasing?
M3gan 2.0 will be released by Universal Pictures in theaters on June 27, 2025. A spin-off is also in the works, titled Soulm8ate.
