Dark Knight Rising Again? Robert Pattinson Teases The Batman 2

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been clear on their own versions of Batman and Superman. Superman has been reintroduced with a new actor, David Corenswet, and the same will hold true for Batman.

Previously, the co-heads of DC Studios have confirmed that Robert Pattinson won’t be in their rebooted version of the DCU. Since Pattinson’s Bat-verse focuses on a younger version of The Caped Crusader, The Brave and the Bold, DCU’s rebooted Batman story will explore the latter part of the superhero’s career. It could include his son Robin, Damian Wayne.

It would be interesting to see how the new Batman film in Gunn and Safran’s DCU will be different from that of Matt Reeves’. Apart from that, we do know the direction of both Batman stories is a bit different. Nevertheless, Robert Pattinson teases The Batman 2- let us dig deeper.

The Batman II‘s place in the DC universe

According to The Nerds of Color, Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios, confirmed that Matt Reeves’ franchise The Batman is still considered under DC Studios’ umbrella and is definitely not separate.

It can be considered in the “Elseworlds” label since they are not directly in the DCU timeline, as is the upcoming Superman movie. The Batman film and The Penguin series are all solely the works of Matt-verse and they are surely going to be released as planned.

Safran explained,

So still under DC Studios. Still under us. We have an incredible relationship with Matt. But those are the only things. It was important that Clayface be part of the DCU. It’s an origin story for, you know, a classic Batman villain.” [Source]

Safran elucidated that it was necessary to do so as they also have to introduce Clayface, an important villain in the Bat-verse whose origin story is in the works.

Robert Pattinson on his casting as Batman

Comic Book Resources cited that Robert Pattinson regards his role as Batman as his great luck. When asked about how he landed the dream role, he said,

“Listen, for The Batman, it was very strange. I never auditioned, and I had never played a superhero before… And then, slowly, it was like an alignment of planets…” [Source]

While Gunn and Safran have announced that Robert Pattinson won’t be their new Batman for the next film, they still love him. However, there are certainly other plans for the next film as they have Robin in mind.

Robert Pattinson teases The Batman 2 — Is production already underway?

Matt Reeves informed that The Batman II is likely to start its production later this year, and the release date is expected to be sometime in 2027. He was satisfied with the fact that Robert Pattinson knew where the sequel’s story would head, and that is why it’s good for the movie’s filming, as cited by Inverse

At the premiere of his latest film, Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson teased about The Batman II, saying that Matt is an intelligent writer and that he already knows what it will be about. Hence, all the information that he can provide us for now is that “It’s very cool, and I’m very excited.”

Moreover, he assured that Matt Reeves is on track with the script, and it verifies that production will begin on the expected time. It is anticipated with that pace no further delays in filming will be seen, and the film will be sailing smoothly for its release in 2027.

Robert Pattinson on Joker’s role in The Batman II

Robert Pattinson mentioned that he only has a “vague idea” that Joker might have a major role in The Batman II, as per Collider. When Barry Keoghan, who previously played a cameo in The Batman I, after it took him six hours for makeup for a short scene, was asked if Joker would return, he said “I can’t say much”.

Matt Reeves has already confirmed Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell who will be playing Batman and The Penguin, respectively. Other villains could have been introduced in the sequel but there is a possibility that Reeves has saved them for the third part. Maybe?

Still, Reeves gave the details that The Penguin is the “entry point” to Gotham’s city criminal proceedings, hence, his presence is mandatory. This part has been discussed with DC Studios and they also agreed to it.

Reeves even teased a bit for the sequel’s story that will delve deeper into Gotham’s corruption and Batman’s new mystery investigations while also exploring his personal struggles, per Super Hero Hype

When is The Batman II releasing?

Although, the film is expected to release somewhere in 2027, but some recent rumors are surfacing that the director Matt Reeves might leave The Batman II, which is still untitled as it is predicted to drop its “part II” tag and will have a tagline with the title.

There are speculations that if any more production delay is announced, Reeves might part ways with the direction of the film, as Robert Pattinson is also involved many new projects.

However, as Pattinson has confirmed above that Reeves is working on the script in a timely manner, and the production will also take place in a well-timed manner.
