The Conjuring Last Rites teaser shows Ed and Lorraine’s One Final Haunting

When it comes to horror, The Conjuring is one of the most terrifying yet fascinating franchises to date. It has never ceased to mesmerize us with the true stories, the real hauntings that have given us nightmares since the commencement of this franchise.

The Conjuring Last Rites teaser has set the stage for another last fight with a diabolical being based on Ed and Lorraine Warren’s investigative diaries.

Plot details of The Conjuring: Last Rites

The Last Rites teaser hasn’t revealed any explicit details about the plot, but we know that it is based on the true events of the Smurl family haunting. The teaser starts with showing the possessions of Ed and Lorraine Warren that they have collected from the evil cases, such as the Annabelle doll.

Even Ed Warren’s voice in the new teaser clearly indicates that “Everything you see in here is either haunted, cursed”. But the evil that cursed the Smurl family does not bring a toy with it.

It has been “waiting patiently” for Lorraine, as we can hear the demonic voice in the teaser telling Lorraine. Also, the teaser urges the audience to discover why this case was their last.

What is the Smurl family haunting about?

With the teaser release of The Conjuring: Last Rites, the biggest question arises: what is the Smurl family haunting about? Jack and Janet Smurl reported a supernatural abuse that resulted in sexual assault by a succubus.

After failed attempts from the Catholic Church to cast the evil spirits away, the family desperately asked Warrens for help. The demon made the lives of the Smurl family miserable from 1974 to 1989.

Director’s vision for the film

The first two instalments of The Conjuring saga, The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016), were directed by James Wan. The third, The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), was helmed by Michael Chaves. He will be directing this one too, as the horror cinematic verse is about to come to an end.

Since Peter Safran, the new co-head of DC Studios, is the producer of the film alongside Chaves directing it, they both wanted its ending to be MCU-like, as per Movie Web. It is normal for such big franchises to make a crossover of the characters, which instigated them to make Last Rites a shared universe experience.

They wanted to make it as big as possible since it was Warrens’ last investigative story. Chaves and Safran kept on brainstorming by constantly throwing ideas into the air, but eventually, they stepped away.

They decided to make it big by keeping it the “most emotional” and “personal” story of the entire Conjuring franchise. It could be due to the fact that aggressive character crossover sometimes has cost the MCU franchise as the individual characters were unable to create an emotional bond with the viewers, and they failed miserably at it.

Talking of a crossover, Chaves even disclosed that he was craving to build a connection between The Nun and Warrens, but since both of them are true stories, there were some legal barriers. His idea for this crossover had to be kept aside.

Fans’ reaction to the saga’s end

The fans cannot wait any longer for the final show of The Conjuring saga. The comments section of the YouTube teaser for the film is filled with emotional and full of excitement messages.

One of them said,

“Nothing lasts forever… but the impact that James Wan, Patrick Wilson, and Vera Farmiga had on the horror genre will live eternally.” [Source]

They were happy that the franchise had always delivered what it promised, and it has been nothing short of a memory that they have lived with until now.

The horror legacy that The Conjuring franchise has built is unbeatable. There is always something captivating about the true stories, as they have their struggles and some form of sadness that real-life humans have endured for a long time. For example, the upcoming movie Weapons is based on some of the director’s own loss of a close one in his own life, and other real disappearances of children that inspired him to make a feature-length film.

However, there is a difference between films ‘based on true stories’ and films ‘inspired by true stories’. While Weapons could be a film ‘inspired’ by true stories, Scoop (2024) and Society of the Snow (2023) are films based on true incidents (original Netflix films).

Not meaning to digress from the main point here, but the Last Rites teaser certainly gives the chills to capture the essence of the series’ horror legacy. It is EXACTLY how we want it to be, or even scarier (we don’t mind). The trailer suggests the story will be more frightening as it sets the atmosphere by showing eerie, possessed objects at the beginning of the teaser.

It elevates its signature horror element by giving glimpses of the past hauntings and introducing a disturbing storyline. The teaser implies that it will be more personal this time, with an introspection factor of Warren’s journey.

Certainly, a more emotional journey is portrayed when the Warrens were retired but had to come back for their one last case. At that time, their daughter Judy (played by Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend (played by Ben Hardy) were present in the timeline. This adds a new layer of complexity.

And of course, the layer of authenticity was never missing in The Conjuring series as the real-life story of the Smurl family haunting will deliver the scares that we yearn for.
