How did Wicked make it to the top?
As we said, most of the films that earned their spot on the top-grossing box office hits of 2024, alongside the top nine that are sequels or spin-offs. One major reason for Wicked‘s success is its Broadway adaptation. It clicked well with the women, and its content did not, by any chance, have anything to do with race.
Besides, convincing performances, its co-existence with other notable releases at that time of the year, such as Moana 2, was another factor for its victory. Although this factor mostly contributes to a film’s competitiveness, and its diminishing chances when other prominent releases are set to hit theatres.
Inside Out 2, Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong, Deadpool and Wolverine, etc. are all the sequels that people were familiar with and have a high likelihood of gaining significant revenues. Wicked was the only distinct movie that was neither a sequel nor a spin-off.
It was a first-time effort for a Broadway musical adaptation that wielded enchantment. The unique visual spectacle of the theatrical performance of Wicked, based on the ‘Wizard of Oz’ story, created an impactful, memorable experience.
