There have been several versions of the classic tale of Robin Hood, but a darker version of something so vintage is what we are all looking forward to.
And this is what Michael Sarnoski (director of A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig) has promised. Bill Skarsgård joins Hugh Jackman in the star-studded cast of The Death of Robin Hood, marking Sarnoski’s next exhilarating adventure.
Plot of The Death of Robin Hood
Based on AOL reports, the film synopsis reveals Hugh Jackman in the titular role will be seen as a “battleworn loner” who is fighting with his crooked past that includes crime and murders. After getting seriously injured, he finds himself under the care of a mysterious woman who gives him a chance at salvation.
Hugh Jackman, the Wolverine star, and Jodie Comer, the Killing Eve actress, were already confirmed in the cast. It is the Dancing Clown Pennywise that has now entered the scene. Skarsgard is up for other exciting projects like Locked, Dead Man’s Wire for Gus Van Sant, and a Pennywise series called It: Welcome to Derry.
Also, Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) are the new additions to the cast.
As the resumes of each actor are filled with roles that have brought depth to the screen, having worked in multiple genres, they all make an impressive addition ot the cast.
Sarnoski posted on Instagram some of the pictures with his cast, saying,
“Thank you to this amazing cast and crew…I couldn’t be happier with this group of people and what we’re making together”.
How is this Robin Hood adaptation different?
The Robin Hood character and story are nothing new to the audience as it has been adapted to screen more than a few dozen times. How Michael Sarnoski’s version is intriguing is something that we are looking answers for.
As the plot suggests that Robin is a loner and has a “criminal past”, it is suddenly captivating to think what kind of criminal record a person like Robin Hood could have.
We have always heard of Robin Hood as a good man who steals from the rich and gives wealth to the poor who have been suffering due to their social status. How the intensity of crime becomes so grave that Robin Hood could possibly have a criminal past and is injured enough to be given under the care of a mysterious woman is a new dimension that the Robin Hood story might take a turn to.
Has the production started yet?
A24 acquired the US rights in Cannes to the darker version that has never been told before. Lyrical Media is financing the flick while Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett are the producers under Ryder Picture Company.
True Brit Entertainment will release the film in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
No release date has been announced yet. There is neither a teaser nor a trailer.
Only principal photography has begun in Northern Ireland. Here is the proof:
As per Film Stories, the production began in February 2025. With this, a prediction could be set for the film’s potential release, at least in 2026.
Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett dropped a bit of a teaser by saying that it will not be anything typical that is ever known of Robin Hood, per Bloody Disgusting. It is something entirely unexpected since Michael Sarnoski has crafted a film “far more grounded and visceral.”
Here’s more proof that the production has ended in Ireland, as Hugh Jackman just dropped first look behind-the-scene images on his Instagram.

What inspired Michael Sarnoski to direct The Death of Robin Hood?
While talking to Milwaukee, Michael Sarnoski revealed that he had had this project in his mind for quite some time. He desired to work on this movie’s script since he couldn’t get it out of his head.
He explained that he knows the fact that several other versions of Robin Hood had been made before and it wouldn’t be easy to come up with another one, but it was special to him because “it’s a very loose retelling of the old Robin Hood legends, but in a way that tries to reinvent the character.”
In his opinion, the reinvention would take place by getting Robin Hood back to his original roots. It wouldn’t be difficult for him since his work in A Quiet Place: Day One synchronizes with his mastery of dark movies.
The horror genre featuring a bleak and unsettling setting is something we have seen before in Sarnoski’s works. It wouldn’t be challenging for him in the same genre, rather, it would be challenging in terms of competition for the same character that has been revived several times before.
Taking a look back at his previous work, he has the skill of creating tension, sometimes with emotion and with tension-building tactics in the scenes, without having to rely on loud action scenes, as observed in A Quiet Place: Day One.
An anticipation has already started to take shape for a balance between action and emotional depth. It will be thrilling to witness how he creates an impact this time with his unique interpretation.
Fans’ reaction after hearing that Bill Skarsgard joins Hugh Jackman
Fans are going crazy for both of the heroes in one flick!! Robin Hood’s darker adaptation is something new that has already created a stir among the fans.
Moreover, the presence of Bill Skarsgard, who has magnificently portrayed villains like Count Orlok in Nosferatu and Pennywise in the It franchise, has incited a nail-biting excitement for fans.
Sarnoski has the knack of bringing in the cast so riveting that it generates a special energy that we can expect to see in the movie. Bill Skarsgard, as we have spotted him before, has an unpredictable vitality that makes him a compelling addition to the film’s family.
If A24’s name attached to the project also does not grab your attention, we can’t say what will. Because it has been grabbing eyeballs all over the world with hit films like Hereditary, The Witch, The Green Knight, and the list does not end. The studio has a gift of subverting expectations by pushing boundaries and eventually delivering imperishable cinematic experiences in the end.
