The Conjuring franchise is almost inseparable from Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, but upcoming plans indicate the next installment may proceed without them.
Despite promoting The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) as the final film of the Conjuring-verse, a Conjuring prequel film is reportedly in the works amidst Paramount and Netflix bids for Warner Bros acquisition.
Last Rites earned $487 million globally, making it the franchise’s best so far, according to Variety. It was billed as the franchise’s last, as verified by New Line Cinema CCO Richard Brener. He declared Last Rites the end of the “phase one” of the extended Conjuring universe.
It could be inferred that this sets the stage for the beginning of “phase two,” and the Conjuring universe is definitely not ending this year.
What is the Conjuring prequel film about?
Will there be another Conjuring movie after Last Rites? This question kept revolving after Last Rites was marked as the final chapter. But yes, the next Conjuring universe movie is confirmed after the success of Last Rites.
Plot details have been kept under wraps, but Variety revealed that it will focus on the early ghost-hunting days of Ed and Lorraine. Earlier, the Conjuring spinoffs have gone in different directions, but still, they have stayed true to the franchise’s atmospheric horror.
As fans noticed in early scenes of Last Rites, it introduced the younger versions of Ed and Lorraine in the beginning, which will be a good start for the prequel’s story to take a hint from. It may expand from there, as they were both only 14 years old. Hence, there is plenty of room to create an interesting story around it in the very timeframe.
It will be fascinating to watch Ed and Lorraine as amateurs, trying to become confident with their expertise and gradually growing over time. This gives the franchise a vantage point to take a head start in the second phase.
Moreover, the Conjuring prequel trailer is also absent at the moment, but we cannot wait for one soon.
Who will star in The Conjuring prequel?
The cast for the Conjuring prequel is not confirmed. Although Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are not expected to return, the story is likely to focus on Ed and Lorraine’s early years, suggesting that younger actors may be cast in their roles.
No final deal has been closed that could have certified the return of Wilson and Farmiga; they did say goodbye to the franchise via their Instagram accounts.
Wilson thanked everyone on the team who had been with him for years, ending the post by saying, “Ed Warren…out”. Similarly, Farmiga recounted her journey that started “5000 days ago” with Wilson, the day she signed a contract and had to say “Yes, I do” in a fake marriage with Wilson as Ed and Lorraine.
Wilson also confessed that, as far as they know, the franchise owners aren’t expecting anything more from them, as the road for Ed and Lorraine ends here.
What is the order of the Conjuring universe?
There are ten movies in total within The Conjuring universe. It includes four Conjuring movies, and some spinoffs like three Annabelle movies, The Nun and The Nun 2, and The Curse of La Llorona.
In chronological order, they are:
- The Conjuring (2013)
- Annabelle (2014)
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
- Annabelle: Creation (2017)
- The Nun (2018)
- Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
- The Curse of La Llorna (2019)
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
- The Nun 2 (2023)
- The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025)
Netflix vs Paramount: What’s Warner Bros’ future?
Warner Bros (WB) is at the centre of an intense corporate battle for acquisition, where Netflix places a bid of $82.7 billion, against which Paramount valued its bid at $108 billion.
Since news of the Conjuring prequel broke two months ago, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema will have to reassess their upcoming projects as Netflix’s acquisition plans loom.
Whatever the outcome, it will significantly change WB’s direction for future projects, along with that of DC’s. It will reshape the entertainment industry landscape, with major implications for content libraries, streaming competition, and theatrical releases.
James Wan and Peter Safran are the creative architects of The Conjuring universe, with Wan directing the first two films and Safran producing the franchise. Both these figures have helped massively in shaping the horror vision, contributing to its worldwide success.
James Wan is rumored to be exiting the The Conjuring universe, but there is no official confirmation. Currently, he is facing creative and financial disputes with Warner Bros regarding his future involvement. Simultaneously, Wan is officially set to produce the Paranormal Activity revival film, further complicating speculation about WB’s future.
With all these changes happening, one thing is certain: Warner Bro’s future is about to change. Whoever takes the throne, the trajectory of the entire WB brand will become a high-stakes showdown.
The Conjuring prequel release date
There is no official release date for the new Conjuring prequel film. Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior Conjuring films and The Nun (2023), are both on board to pen the script of The Conjuring prequel.
Rodrogue Huart, known for his short film Transylvanie (2023), is in talks to direct the film.
