The 1986 Highlander is getting a reboot, where the iconic role of the immortal was initially played by Christopher Lambert, known as Connor MacLeod.
This time, it will have a sharper, modern look, as John Wick’s Chad Stahelski is set to helm Henry Cavill in Highlander, based on the script from Kerry Williamson and Mike Finch. This week, the first look at Henry Cavill was released through his official Instagram account, and fans have been ecstatic.
Reported plot details of Highlander
The official synopsis on IMDb states that an immortal Scottish swordsman will have to fight another group of immortal warriors aiming to obtain “the prize.”
Further details of the plot are missing, but since the film is a reinvention of the 1980s film, it will center around Cavill’s MacLeod as he faces his past and discovers that he is one of the immortals who can only die by beheading. Their only destiny otherwise is to fight each other for the coveted prize.
According to JoBlo, an online plot leak also indicated that MacLeod will be “haunted by loss and the endless cycle of violence by a secret organization.” This will mark his return to the battle along with the resurfacing of the ruthless immortal, Kurgan.
The battle will have only one survivor, and with the help of his mentor, Ramirez (likely to be played by Russell Crowe), and a mortal ally, archaeologist Kate Bennett, McLeod should win the prize.
An official trailer for the film has not been released yet.
Director’s vision for the film
Chad Stahelski directed all four of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick movies and was heavily involved in the making of Ana de Armas-led spin-off, Ballerina. This will be his first non-John Wick film.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Chad Stahelski disclosed his vision for the film. He believes that Highlander’s mythology has massive potential and endless opportunities in the story, and he wants to bring them on screen. He said,
“There isn’t an episode of the TV show that I didn’t watch, hoping for more or wanting more…For whatever reason, 20 years later, I want more Highlander. I think that franchise with the mythology of people going through the centuries…It’s a playground for everything that I love about the John Wick series… it gives me another realm to play in.” [Source]
Before the John Wick films, Stahelski was originally best known as a stunt and fight coordinator with ownership of a now-developed full-service production entity, 87 Eleven. The company has designed action for films such as Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), The Bullet Train (2022), and The Hunger Games (2012 onwards), etc.
His vision for Highlander may showcase his ability for effective worldbuilding and thrilling action set pieces, which seemed almost impossible at first thought. He can balance multiple story arcs flawlessly while still delivering the action that audiences are hungry for. Stahelski’s Highlander reboot is poised to explore themes of guilt and existentialism.
How will Henry Cavill in Highlander reimagine the iconic immortal?
Newly released images from the Highlander reboot offer fans their first look at Henry Cavill in character, with one photo showing the former The Witcher and Superman star wearing a trench coat, while another captures him wielding a sword.
Production on the film has now officially begun, with Cavill leading the cast. The reboot also stars Dave Bautista (The Wrecking Crew) as the antagonist, Kurgan.
First announced in 2021, the film experienced several delays, including one caused by a serious injury Cavill sustained during preparations for the project.
Per JoBlo, Stahelski wanted someone who would look as if he had been trained for 500 years since he has been alive for that much time. This explains that Cavill will bring a physical, battle-worn presence to the role. Early images also suggest the same idea, where the immortal is shaped by fatigue, scars, and mystique.
As the character is meant to exist for over 500 years, “a broad spread of character arc” is predicted. Character lore and emotional depth will be evident, portraying MacLeod’s psychological cost of living forever. His loss, isolation, and moral weariness accumulated over the centuries will give the character more emotional grounding and reliability.
Finally, the reboot aims to modernize the story without abandoning its roots. We have seen Cavill’s version in The Witcher, where his combat work and extensive training in sword handling felt lethal as well as stylized. The same discipline is foreseen to carry over to Highlander, where swordplay is central to the story.
Definitely, under Stahelski’s direction, it is going to be stylishly precise, weighty, and brutal. Just like John Wick, Cavill also brought a quiet, internalized performance to The Witcher’s Geralt. Much of the character’s depth came through subtle expression, body language, and quiet demeanor. This approach naturally works for an immortal character in Highlander, where Cavill will have lived for centuries, carrying the emotional weight of countless battles, losses, and identities.
When is Highlander releasing?
Amazon MGM has not announced an official release date for Highlander at the moment. However, it is expected that it will most likely find a spot on the release schedule of 2027.
