Clayface is finally getting a live-action debut in the DC reboot led by James Gunn and Peter Safran—exciting news for DC Comics fans.
Tom Rhys Harries was recently confirmed to be playing the titular character. The first plot details of Clayface are out, and we are intrigued to find how the origin story of Batman’s oldest and one of its strongest villains will get the spotlight.
Plot details of Clayface (2026)
According to Comic Book Resource (CBR), Clayface follows Gotham actor Matt Hagen, who hopes to make it in Hollywood, seeing his appearance as key to his dreams.
After a troubled past catches up with him, Hagen is disfigured and transforms into a shape-shifting monster.
He seeks help from Dr. Caitlin Bates, whose cast has not been confirmed yet. She will be his love interest as well. The character is originally created for the film.
The story’s complexity is expected to increase as Bates tries to grow her company by attempting to give Clayface a cure. This will make her own relationship with her fiancé, John, more complicated. The cast member for John is also not confirmed.
James Watkins (Speak No Evil) is directing the film, which is majorly inspired by “Feat of Clay” episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.

Casting of Clayface
When Tom Rhys Harries was first selected for the role, Gunn took to social media and expressed his excitement. He explained that he wanted a newcomer for the role whose origin story would match the plot details (up-and-coming actor).
Casting for Bates and John’s roles is yet to be made official, but one thing is for sure: Batman has several well-known crime bosses, and John is a detective who is also the main antagonist of the Clayface film.
There will be a new crime boss for the Clayface film, particularly created for this feature. The writers of the film asked the fans to expect a least recognizable DC character to play the villain of the movie.
Do the first plot details of Clayface confirm a horror-inspired origin?
Yes, it is a horror-inspired origin story where most of the parts will be “body horror,” but it will also give an in-depth emotional feel. It will be the complex writing and direction skills that will put together the layers of the villainous character.
An obvious part of the plot is the transformation of Matt Hagen into a shape-shifting clay, falling clearly under the body horror subgenre. Together (2025) was also a body horror recently released, but it gave us the icks that we couldn’t handle.
Clayface is different for two reasons:
- First, it is the villain from DC’s Barman verse that is getting its debut ever.
- Second, Clayface is from the DC Studio, especially after Gunn and Safran took over, and people loved Superman (2025)– the first highly anticipated film from Gunn’s DC reboot.
And obviously, Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House (2018) was a major horror hit series, which makes Clayface’s psychological body horror plot a deep dive into the mental toll of the character Clayface.
A horror thriller combined with tragedy seems to be a lethal combination. And Gunn’s decisions of getting lesser-known faces for the DC reboot seem to be a winning formula, as the audience’s perception of the already-established celebrity personas might mix with the character’s journey, forcing the plot to fall flat.
James Gunn already confirmed Clayface is R-rated
A month ago, James Gunn clarified in an interview with CBS Mornings that Clayface is an R-rated film since he does not want people to get bored. He wants to give people a diverse storytelling experience from DC Studios.
Are there any photo reveals of Clayface (2026)?
There are rumors across social media that first reveal photos of the Clayface film production. The film’s production was scheduled to kick off in September, though.
No reports have been recorded from any official source, such as James Gunn’s official Instagram account or DC Studios’ page.
Mike Flanagan, who recently directed Stephen King’s adaptation of The Life of Chuck, and Hossein Amini (The Two Faces of January) wrote the script for Clayface.
When is Clayface releasing?
Soon after Superman (2025) and Supergirl (2026), Clayface is set to be the third DC Studios release, with a September 11, 2026, release date.
