Netflix is already in trouble after the teaser trailer release of one of the most anticipated movies of Guillermo del Toro for this year. Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro is one of the few twisted tales that is retold by the Mexican filmmaker who won an Oscar for The Shape of Water (2017).
Why is Netflix in trouble for that? Because people want an apparently fantastic movie to be released in theatres. And if it turns out to be a flop flick, the platform will be rebuked for low-quality content.
2025 belongs to horror genre, and Frankenstein is one of the eagerly-awaited movies. Here’s what we know about it to date.
Plot details of Frankenstein (2025)
The teaser trailer for Frankenstein (2025) has just landed on the internet, and netizens are going crazy. Almost every comment in the YouTube trailer section is filled with one demand only: this should be released in theatres due to the film’s visual grandeur.
The story is clearly based on the classic tale by Mary Shelley, published initially in 1818. The official synopsis of the film mentions a “brilliant but egotistical scientist” who had a vision. A vision of creating “death” and wanting to experiment with something deadly that no one has ever tried before.
His creation becomes a sinister and tragic consequence of his actions. Oscar Isaac is the mad scientist who proudly says, “I did” when someone asks, “What manner of devil made him?”
What are the lethal consequences of his actions, it will only be unveiled with the film’s release. One thing is for sure- del Toro’s touch on the plot is dark and crooked with modern film storytelling, still keeping intact the Gothic visual style.

Director’s vision for the film
Guillermo del Toro’s several movies have a Gothic touch. Frankenstein is his follow-up to Nightmare Alley (2021), which was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture.
This will be the first collaboration between del Toro and Oscar Isaac, and it would certainly be interesting to watch both of them create magic on screen. del Toro is known for making films that have truly unique visuals, and with Isaac on the project, it will be fascinating to see how the upcoming creation gets the buzz.
According to Variety, the film is an emotional story for the director. He told,
“Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes? For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me.” [Source]
del Toro has opened up about working on this classic tale several times since 2006. He said he “would kill to make” this film, but with his special touch. He had planned to make the greatest version of Frankenstein’s story ever made. Once it is made, it is done and dusted. You cannot redo it and dream of it anymore, he revealed.
He elaborated that he aims to highlight those parts of the story in his film that have been left out in other adaptations, such as the framing device along with the North Pole sequence.
Of course, the trailer’s opening shows ice and snow everywhere, which already gives a glimpse of a place similar to the North Pole. It implies that we are going to get much from the North Pole.
The star cast also includes Jacob Elordi as the monster and Mia Goth as Victor’s fiancée. No clear images of Elordi’s monster have been disclosed, which keeps the intrigue factor of the teaser quite high- a perfect sign that something big is coming.
How will Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro reimagine the classic monster tale?

Since del Toro has imagined creating the quintessential tale since his childhood days, it must have taken deep thinking and planning for the story and how it should be different from the previous adaptations by different directors. His iconography of the dearly classic tale that will have his own infusion of typical del Toro filmography already makes it different from the others.
With the recent blockbuster release of another classic take on Nosferatu (2024) that has blown away box office records, Frankenstein is also expected to be released in cinemas rather than on Netflix. This is already in comparison with Nosferatu, as the contrast between humans and monsters is making waves on the internet.
With del Toro’s pursuit of the story for almost 25 years, he has confirmed that most of his life has been consumed with the ideation of this film and its demonstration of the relationship between creator and creation, father and son.
We already see signs of del Toro’s signature touch in his reimagining of Frankenstein—a blend of haunting elegance and emotional depth. Visuals like a decaying staircase where Victor stands, and a monstrous hand reaching toward him while a voice calls his name against a backdrop of flames, hint at a picture-perfect embodiment of contemporary gothic cinema. These elements reflect the rich, atmospheric style we’ve come to expect from del Toro—a filmmaker who turns horror into visual poetry.
