The DC Universe is about to change. Will Superman’s new villain, Braniac, redefine the DCU? An enemy whose threat eclipses anything they’ve encountered before.
We already know Lex Luthor and Superman will team up to fight a bigger villain in Superman follow-up ‘Man of Tomorrow’, expected to be released in 2027. James Gunn has greater plans for his DC reboot, which commenced with the shining box office success of Superman: Legacy (2025).
Gunn confirmed with a social media post that the German actor, Lars Eidinger (appeared in Jay Kelly and White Noise), will be playing Superman Man of Tomorrow villain Braniac. This is the first time Braniac is getting a big-screen live-action debut. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn’s post cited,
“In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.” [Source]
What do we know about Superman: Man of Tomorrow?
Earlier, Gunn opened up about the story of Man of Tomorrow, where it will be focused equally on both Superman and Lex Luthor. They will have to work together to face a much bigger and more powerful threat, which will be more complicated than before.
David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will be reprising their respective roles as Superman and Lex Luthor. It will be fascinating to watch them both reunite in the face of a larger menace, especially after standing on opposite sides in the recent Superman film.
We can predict their unease by forced collaboration, which might shed light on working on their personal differences. It will be a rare sight to watch them work on their long-standing rivalry for the sake of a common goal.
This alliance will add an emotional depth to the story, revealing new layers of both characters. In the process of overcoming a monumental danger, they will be navigating mistrust, ego, and reluctant respect.
Will Superman Man of Tomorrow villain Brainiac be the biggest threat yet?
Braniac is one of the most highly-requested villains in the DC-verse, who has been in demand for the last couple of years. Braniac is the classic Superman villain who debuted in 1958’s Action Comics no. 242.
Gunn has eventually decided to revive him in his next Superman film after a long delay, since Gunn wants to transform DC Studios from what it has been in the previous years.
What does it mean to have Brainiac in the Superman film now? Unlike Lex Luthor, Brainiac represents a cosmic-scale antagonist, forcing Superman stories to expand beyond Earth-based conflicts—something Gunn has previously emphasized as a key goal for the DCU.
Branianic is originally considered far more powerful than Lex Luthor as a villain in DC comics. It is due to his alien origins, advanced technology, and cosmic-level threats, often collecting planets.
Lex and Braniac have merged in some stories, creating formidable power that can surpass even Darkseid- a villain often considered the DC Universe’s greatest villain, whose “true form” is a multiversal threat.
Having Braniac as the bigger threat in Superman-Luthor’s unlikely partnership story will be an interesting angle to look forward to since he is a hyperintelligent alien with a twelfth-level intellect, possessing ultimate cognitive powers.
He is deemed an alien android with a genius-level brain, superior to human cognitive abilities, whose absolute knowledge might lead to planetary destruction, making him a universal danger.
When is Superman: Man of Tomorrow releasing?
Man of Tomorrow’s filming is scheduled to begin next year and is slated for a release on July 9, 2027. Before that, the end of this year might bring the news of a finalized deal with Eidinger for the Brainiac’s role.
