How will Superman and his legendary allies shape a new era? Why does the world need Superman and his Justice crew? And will they change the world? James Gunn is of the view that Justice Gang are work friends of Superman.
There has rarely been any Justice League member involved in a Superman movie before, except where a clash of two worlds of two distinct superheroes was shown. We are talking about Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which introduced Batman and Wonder Woman, setting the stage for the larger Justice League.
In Gunn’s Superman reboot, a new trio dubbed the ‘Justice Gang’—his term for Superman’s work allies—steps in as a fresh take on the Justice League dynamic. To understand what each hero brings to the Justice-trio and the story of Superman, get to know them closely.
James Gunn and Edi Gathegi’s thoughts on the super trio
Less than a month before the release of James Gunn’s Superman, which marks a reboot of DC Studios, Gunn shared with Entertainment Weekly what the three metahumans mean to Superman.
The trailer has already instigated some speculations from the fans, but here is the precise explanation from James Gunn. He disclosed,
“I approached it like Clark Kent has his work friends and his play friends. I tend to think his work friends are the Justice Gang and his play friends are the Daily Planet gang.” [Source]
James Gunn had already clarified before how he wanted his new Superman movie to be. He wanted to show the human and emotional side of the characters, especially Superman. Superman‘s final trailer release has cleared our doubts about why he thought that saving humanity was the only thing he could think of in times of distress, disregarding any political or geographical boundaries.
Therefore, James Gunn wanted to tell the story of different people connected to Superman. How that would shape Superman and how his decisions would affect him is the real inside story that we expect to see on July 11.
Besides, Edi Gathegi, playing the role of Mister Terrific, revealed that they have their own specialized skill sets and their personalities are unique. There might be clashes among the three, but they know what is morally right.
The conflict will, indeed, be the fun part of the story. We cannot hold our excitement as the Justice Gang, we will meet in the Superman film is coming into focus. Here is a sneak peek at the three members of the super-group in Superman.
Who are the Justice Gang people? Justice Gang are work friends of Superman- it changes everything!

Gunn interpreted how the new Superman film works. It is set in a world where the existence of metahumans is not a big deal for common people. It is just like seeing “Paul McCartney on the sidewalk in New York”.
However, they are corporate-backed. Maxwell Lord (played by Sean Gunn) owns LordTech Industries. Making money through corporate sponsorships might be complicated to understand when it comes to making money for these superheroes.
This does not mean Justice Gang are not good people. It is their day job- after all, they have to pay their rent. Just like Clark Kent, when he is not Superman, he is doing a normal job just to pay for his expenses.
Guy Gardner
Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner, whose haircut Edi Gathegi thinks is “ridiculous”. He is the Green Lantern, a member of the Green Lantern Corps. The intergalactic organization is responsible for managing various sectors of the cosmos.
Every member is granted a special ring that gives the owner special powers. Guy Gardner can conjure anything he thinks of- weapons, force, armor, fire, etc. He can even fly with the help of his ring if he wants.
Because of this, he thinks he is capable of challenging Superman. James Gunn has planned the entry of Guy at a spot-on timing in the film as we are about to meet him when everyone else in Justice Gang are already fed up of his crap.
He seems to be a nonsensical person and has played his role “perfectly” well, according to Gathegi’s comments. Other members don’t take him seriously and sometimes treat him roughly. Gathegi feels that he is quite convincing in his character and he is surely going to wow audiences.
Hawkgirl
Isabela Merced plays Hawkgirl with this summer’s new Man of Steel, in Gunn’s style. Merced’s character is meant to fly, all the time. Her wings clearly tell the tale. It seems that she was previously trained for the role in Alien: Romulus and Madame Web.
Hawkgirl’s character, known as Kendra Saunders, is a warrior reincarnated from a race of winged humanoid aliens called Thanagarians. She belongs to the planet Thanagar and remembers who she is. Her character needs to have a military vibe with modern girl touches.
Gunn has not opened all of his cards for several things yet, Merced told. Kendra a.k.a Hawkgirl is a “cool, sassy character” and she is proud to play such a role in Superman.
Mister Terrific
Edi Gathegi is portraying Mister Terrific. He is one of the mutant characters in Marvel comics who can adapt and evolve to diverse environments, making him a difficult target to kill.
Gathegi loved to be brought back as he was wiped out by Kevin Bacon’s villain. But Gathegi knew he could not be eradicated that easily. Unlike Guy, who makes rash decisions, Mister Terrific’s personality is embedded in his force field and hologram-creating abilities, which ask for peace and tranquility.
How Mister Terrific will use his talents alongside Superman would be fascinating to watch. With stakes being high, the characters are predestined to go through intricate self-development processes on the path of humanization.
Do you think these three members of Justice Gang make sense with the final trailer of Superman and his story? The film is hitting theatres on July 11. So pumped for this!
