Elves and trolls might be fictional characters but demons and hell creatures in Constantine were real. John Constantine is known as the official occult ‘demon slayer’ and we are dying to see him suited again for action.
Keanu Reeves updates on Constantine 2 and we are yearning to light up his cigarette again, even if it means after two long decades. The long-awaited sequel of Constantine 2 is possibly in the works but it still needs a green light from DC.
What is the current status of Constantine 2?
While talking to Inverse, Keanu Reeves let the cat out of the bag that the project is gaining progression. Reeves and Francis Lawrence, the director of previous Constantine, his very first film after directing music videos for J Lo and other stars, have pitched their version of Constantine 2 to DC Studios.
The Matrix actor said that the project is now taking shape in the form of a script in which John Constantine, an occult detective, and exorcist in a 2005 movie was the one with Spear of Destiny. The entire war between good and evil was just because of this spear, on which the characters vied for control over it.
In a struggle between his condemnation to hell and finding the truth of teen suicide, Constantine is aiming for a comeback soon. The plot details of Constantine 2, however, remain under wraps for now.
The sequel to the dreary world is awaited though and Keanu Reeves continued to explain,
“We’re not going off that…John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more”.
Keanu Reeves can’t wait to play the titular role!
As per Comic Book, Keanu Reeves has been dying to play the role again since 2019. After its first release, Constantine received mixed reviews and even some harsh criticisms from comic book fans.
Still, the film managed to enjoy a cult-like following whose biggest supporter is Reeves himself. While talking to Inverse, Reeves elucidated that they have been trying to come up with its sequel for more than ten years now.
DC Studios could not make up its mind since at that time, DC Studios itself underwent several changes in the creative departments, causing unpredicted obstacles. Now, James Gunn of DC Studios said “Okay, we’re going to try and write a script”, Reeves confirmed.
While Reeves was busy giving us a fantastic closure to the John Wick series and sequel to The Matrix, there remains no discrepancy that the second installment of Constantine had taken a long time to take shape after all.
John Wick star was vocal about the process and disclosed that Akiva Goldsman and himself are working together on writing for Constantine’s sequel. They have been collaborating well and have come up with great ideas, about which Reeves is already super-excited.
Akiva Goldstar verified to Screen Rant a few months ago that he has been working on Constantine’s script lately. He even gave details that the script almost took the shape of a show but the rights situation did not work that way.
What is the release date of Constantine 2?
The release date is not confirmed yet but its chances of happening in 2025 are on. The film is already in the development phase and we can expect constant updates throughout this year, it is predicted.
We all are craving a teaser, trailer, or poster release for Constantine 2 to get a glimpse of sorcery and supernatural kicks. Furthermore, no hints of the cast for Constantine 2 are present as yet except for Keanu Reeves reprising the demonologist John Constantine.
What do fans expect after Keanu Reeves updates on Constantine 2?
Fans should know that Constantine 2 would be an R-rated movie. Based on a recent interview with DC.com, Francis Lawrence verified that he wanted to stay true to Hellblazer comic feel.
After he began collaborating with Akiva Goldsman in screenwriting for Constantine 1, they knew it had to be an R-rated film. It was the only way to give a Hellblazer experience. Sadly, that wasn’t possible at that time.
There was pressure upon them to “justify a $96 million budget” and had to turn it around. Still, it gave an R-rated movie vibe, proving to be a box office monster, grossing $230 million. Despite the initial vision of making an R-rated flick, the goal had to be kept for a PG-13 movie right from the start, Lawrence validated.
The story’s intensity and the believability of angels and demons being real pushed the movie to be an R-rated film. Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) had to assign an R to Constantine part one.
This time, the goals have changed. The fans should get ready for R-rated thrills as the details are already clear. Constantine will be tortured more which means there could be more violence, fury, and brutality. Keeping fingers crossed!
