Lee Cronin stepped into the horror world by helming Evil Dead Rise, whose standalone entry, Evil Dead Burn, will aim to expand the universe.
Under Cronin’s supervision, the horror reimagining of the franchise takes shape, and the recently released The Mummy teaser reveals a far darker vision, entirely different from what we have seen before.
Plot details ofThe Mummy (2026)
The plot of The Mummy focuses on a journalist’s daughter who goes missing in a desert and reappears after eight years. No trace of her was found during those years, and the family had no choice but to keep looking for her and go on with their lives in the meantime.
However, the family gets a terrifying shock when she returns to them. A reunion meant to be joyful instead spiraled into horror. The trailer implies that the mummified entity might be their daughter. No wonder the teaser has an eerie atmosphere.

It should be noted that the horror-focused reimagining of The Mummy is not connected to the 1999 action-adventure franchise starring Brendan Fraser or the 2017 film with Tom Cruise.
Director’s vision for the film
While talking to IGN, Cronin explained that the movie is a “mystery” and seems like a “puzzle box,” which was an attraction for him, too. He said,
“It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [this film is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Seven, but put through my lens and the way that I like to entertain people.” [Source]
He opened up more about the film’s feel and how it would be a fusion of two of the most prominent feature films of the industry. Combining Steven Spielberg’s Poltergeist (1982) and a dark investigative angle of Seven (1995) seems to be a new angle that has not been explored before.
He admits that his young days of life were filled with the magic of Spielberg’s movies, especially drawing inspiration from Amblin Entertainment films, whose logo shows a lonely, troubled child who finds friendship in aliens and magical creatures.
The Hole in the Ground (2019) director confesses that the domestic warmth of the family playing along the lines of terror was a thrilling idea for making The Mummy. This contrast became the key reason that his attention was drawn to Egyptian lore and everything connected to it. The deep, buried secrets of the Egyptian mythology and its unknown language in the drawings and scriptures fascinated him from his very childhood days. Using them to make darker angles of the film was a bewitching approach that the director ultimately embraced.
He elucidated that something is entrancing about the horror embedded in family drama, as he always wants to investigate stories that pull people together, but again, horrifically drift them apart. It is the same thing that he showed in Evil Dead Rise and has noticed in Seven as well. Brad Pitt gained the strength of his familial relationships throughout his investigation as home brings value to the bonds, which makes the fear more convincing.
Why did he choose the fantasy monster, the mummy, as his next subject of horror film? He enlightened that he has watched several horror movies all these years, but the “fear of the other” has always captured his attention. The mummy is an existing part of this world and very much human, but still not alive.
The historical accuracy of the monster brings more depth, according to Cronin. The grounded reality bringing the ingrained dread was the more elaborate purpose of making this film. Leaning in to inspect the “uncanny thing” and bringing it out of the shadows is what the film is meant to do.
How does The Mummy teaser connect to the official poster?
The new take on The Mummy will, however, bring back the franchise to its horror roots but with more gory and twisted elements. The official poster for the film is designed to intrigue the viewers, and that has surely worked.
We have already started wondering how a horror film related to a mummy could be related to the journalist’s daughter named Katie? What happened to her? Is she the mummified version found in the box?
The visual storytelling hints at both tone and narrative, rather than simply advertising the monster. Although the teaser provokes fright with fragmented imagery and unsettling sounds, the poster still keeps everything under wraps.
The ancient violent monster has made things personal this time, and the banded figure not only emphasizes physical terror but psychological terror as well. Certainly, the daughter’s presence adds emotional weight to the story, as the director has intended. The subtle cues create a refreshing callback to the much-needed nightmare from the original films, but with more scares this time.
