What if an algorithm—not a human—decided whether you live or die? It recommends algorithms, has mastered surveillance, assists in automation, and has become our virtual assistants.
Therefore, AI themes in movies have become consistently prevalent. And this is what the Mercy movie trailer presents us with: an AI judge, eliminating all chances of human error.
Plot details of Mercy (2026)
Mercy follows the story of a detective (played by Jurassic World’s Chris Pratt) who has been accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove to the AI judge (played by A House of Dynamite’s Rebecca Ferguson) that he is innocent.
He might be executed if he can’t, since AI is the sole judge who has all the details and phone data of the detective. The program has access to every piece of technology used by the nation, and it is hard to hide your digital footprint from such a hardcore authority.

Director’s vision for the film
Coming from Kazakhstan/Russia and working in Hollywood, Timur Bekmambetov is known for visually bold and experimental films, like Missing (2023), Blue Whale (2021), V2: Escape from Hell (2021), etc. The high-energy visuals blended with modern-age immersive storytelling, Bekmambetov brings a masterpiece to life on screens.
Films like Wanted (2008) and Night Watch (2004) had intense and visually unique, graphic-novel-like spectacle that popularized his “screenlife” filmmaking. He aims to blend Eastern European tone and mythology with Western blockbuster energy.
Since many of his films probe power and manipulation, technology shaping human behavior, and hidden systems controlling humans every day, his heroes aren’t the traditional ones. His heroes are ordinary people caught inside the systems they don’t fully understand.
This makes his films more logical, applicable, and resonant with today’s audiences. Technology has become an active force that shapes our choices, identity, and morality. This makes his heroes reactive rather than dominant.
He opened up on casting his hero, Chris Pratt, and Rebecca, while talking to People magazine. He said,
“When Chris said yes and that he liked the story, then the movie became a real project…Then, we were trying to find who could play AI. And there is only one person in the world who is as smart and tough and beautiful as Rebecca.” [Source]
How does the Mercy movie trailer show a different kind of AI film?
Mercy distinguishes itself from previous AI films like Megan (2022), Companion (2025), The Electric State (2025), Subservience (2024), The Matrix (1999), Terminator (1984), etc., because it shows AI at the core of the judicial system. Mercy’s AI is not a helper or guide here, but rather a major decision-maker.
The film uses a real-time ticking clock narrative to make the circumstances more intense, a good step to keep the audience hooked throughout the film. As the detective is accused of his wife’s murder and has exactly 90 minutes to prove his innocence, the pressure on his nerves will be evident.
In most previous films, AI is seen as an antagonist who always operates against the legal system. Here, AI itself is the legitimate judiciary, an ultimate authority in the near-future world. It has access to every camera, phone, and database connected to any human being in the world, which is a terrifying thought on the whole.
After watching the trailer and the continued pleas of the hero that he didn’t kill his wife shows that he might be telling the truth. The film seems to explore that a system designed for efficiency and without any ”human error” might have biases and flaws after all. Ironically, it is the protagonist who helped make it.
The idea seems fresh as it will investigate who comes to play while making a decision- heart or intelligence, especially when humans are involved as vulnerable beings.
