Why Michelle Trachtenberg Deserved More Lead Roles

Despite getting so much love after the 39-year-old’s death, Michelle Trachtenberg did not get more spotlight in the industry as was predicted. Showcasing her versatility more than any other star at such a young age, fans believed she was underutilized.

Michelle Trachtenberg deserved more lead roles and prominence in her career since most of her appearances were either as a child star or a supporting actress with a small role, just like in Mysterious Skin.

Early brilliance and versatility

She had a clear talent for emotionally nuanced and intelligent performances, which wasn’t actually felt by the industry’s megaminds, sadly. It is an unfortunate world that we live in, but it’s a fact that a person is only regarded after he or she has left the world, realizing later that they were a true asset that went untapped.

Her breakout performance in Harriet the Spy, who couldn’t be trusted with her notebook or even a kitchen knife, resonated with the young audience for a long time. She wanted to be heard, and that is what created a difference in the film. It was a film that didn’t shatter the expectations of its viewers. It was a film that didn’t undermine its young audience’s ability to understand complex themes in a kids’ program.

That is when Trachtenberg infused her intelligence and charm to make the role more convincing. She was only 10 years old in 1996 when Harriet the Spy came out. This was her feature debut.

The Guardian critic addressed the same thing,

“Trachtenberg managed to rack up a dizzying string of major performances before she had even turned 20 years old… She started acting early, a natural who did not receive any formal training.” [Source]

Other than that, her range had started much earlier, when she was nine years old in the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete and Pete, as per the New York Post. She proved her flexible and adaptable spectrum in acting by possessing such vernal freshness.

Several actresses did not get the lead opportunities despite their vast range of talent, playing in diverse genres such as drama, comedy, and thriller. It could be due to typecasting, industry bias, and timing problems. She wasn’t able to carry her transitional parts of acting into adult-lady status.

There is even a stereotyping by Hollywood that they cannot imagine the actresses starting from their young or teenage ages to be perceived as senior adult actors. Her smaller and more convincing roles could not get her recognition, regardless of her consistently strong performances from a young age.

The Buffy years: A quiet powerhouse

Her role as Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), which she played from 2000, three years before the series came to an end, earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination in 2001.

It is proof enough that even at such a tender age, she was not just a little sister, but played a role requiring emotional weight that connected with the audience. She was able to pitch her roles perfectly, leaving an unforgettable impression, even after two decades.

It was this role in which Trachtenberg navigated themes like identity, trauma, and grief brilliantly. She did not shy away from portraying herself with force among the other strong ensemble cast. Her presence stood out just with her expressions.

In which movies Michelle Trachtenberg deserved more lead roles?

In Mysterious Skin, Michelle Trachtenberg had limited screen time as Wendy, but her nuanced performance was impactful and left a lasting impression. The film had great ratings, which was only possible with the complexity demonstrated as a young woman.

She was aware of Neil’s problems and the emotional distance Neil created. Though the movie had a darker theme, she exhibited a layer of warmth and humanity that is impossible to ignore.

Critics have credited her role in Mysterious Skin as one of her most compelling performances, full of empathy and depth. She highlighted the uncomfortable truth in a thought-provoking piece of art in the smoothest way ever, for an actress of such juvenility.

Dramatic depth in underrated roles

Her roles in Ice Princess (2005) and Euro Trip (2004) are some of the most raved-about characters to date. She led and elevated teen cinema with lovely appearances and comedic timing.

Still, these films did not earn her a deep capacity for a long-term stay in the industry with prominent lead roles. Her aptitude outshone, but she did not make it to receive a serious adult lead role, tragically.

The industry’s shortcomings

You might call it a “teen girl trap,” but the industry has failed to understand that teen girls who shine brightly at the beginning of their careers have the tendency to go a long way. For example, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, and Hilary Duff are all similar examples carrying the same fate as Michelle Trachtenberg.

These quirky teens could not make their way to senior adult roles as authentic lead actresses, or if they did, they did not catch the spotlight as Kate Winslet or Nicole Kidman.

Also, Michelle was overlooked due to gender discrimination and changing trends, where marketing timing did not work out. The studio’s decisions were changed abruptly and instantly, someone else was hired for the role.

Talking about gender discrimination, this did not happen with Daniel Radcliffe, who was the most conspicuous teen of his time and still managed to get lead roles in the industry, as in The Woman in Black (2012). Gendered limitations were undisguised.

Wrapping up…

Michelle was working on a big project right before her death. She wrote a screenplay titled “Toy Monster” based on Jerry Oppenheimer’s book, uncovering Mattel’s shady business practices, cited by Daily Mail.

Michelle Trachtenberg did not fade away; Hollywood couldn’t catch up with her. This industry expects women to arrive fully prepared or just disappear. It is time for the industry to change this trend as actresses like her are more capable of owning than the experts could have ever imagined.
