Nicolas Cage in The Surfer is Desperate to Surf- Trailer and Release Date Details

What is the first thought that comes to your mind after having seen Nicolas Cage in Mandy (2018) and Longlegs (2024)? Yes, the guy has a range of getting as much crazy as possible.

We can expect something akin to his upcoming psychological thriller. Nicolas Cage in The Surfer is set to give you a priceless watch with breathtaking beachy scenes as a backdrop, turning into a demented ride.

Plot details of The Surfer

Nicolas Cage plays the role of an unnamed surfer who returns to his childhood idyllic beach with his teenage son (Finn Little) to surf. He becomes aggressive and changes drastically, so much so that he is pushed to his breaking point by the locals who stop him from doing so.

He is humiliated by them in front of his son, which alters everything after the conflict with the local gang of surfers, The Bay Boys. They claim a strict ownership over the beach that was a strong memory of Cage’s childhood.

Disappointed, Sage decides to stay on the beach, which is an open declaration of war against the locals, who are trying to take control of the secluded land. Soon, the conflict escalates, and Cage is pushed to the brink of insanity as the stakes get out of control.

The psychedelic lens into Cage’s character where he loses more and more of his mental cool would unleash a series of events where over-the-top cinematic experiences for the viewers are guaranteed. We can expect a blurred reality when the surfer begins to question his own life and sanity under the scorching sun beach.

Director’s vision for The Surfer

While talking to Hey You Guys, director Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium and Nocebo) disclosed that he was instantly “grabbed” by the script when it first reached him a few years ago. He wanted to do the film in a way where the protagonist observes things subjectively while a lot is going on.

He mentioned that the Australian beach location was remote, but it was perfect because the highs and lows of the beaches were all found together in one spot. They didn’t have to go for one scene at one location and then come back for another scene at another.

How was it working with Nicolas Cage in The Surfer?

The director was all praise for Nicolas Cage as he has his own energy. Cage has been into sports as well and was a perfect fit for the role, Finnegan told in the same interview.

Finnegan spilled the beans that when Cage sat with him to discuss before the shootings, Cage had several ideas. He told him how his voice would start changing, and at what point he would start limping.

The majority of the acts were pre-planned with Cage as they wanted to give the audience a deep feel of the character and his rage, especially in the scenes where Cage snaps. The acts, therefore, went quite smoothly.

He even cited an example where the scene between Nicolas Cage and Julian McMahon became intense and this was the first time they were both meeting each other. The director had to work on that scene the entire day, but it turned out quite well.

It was the scene when Nicolas Cage’s voice was changing and Julian McMahon was standing tall, strong, and a bit intimidating.

Julian McMahon’s thoughts on working with Nicolas Cage

Julian McMahon expressed his excitement to Deadline about his role as Scally in the film as he wondered what a tough journey Cage is going through. He said,

“I remember thinking, woah, what a horrific trip for this guy… I thought it would be kind of fun to play [Scally]. It felt so extreme.”

He was fascinated by the thought that Cage would bring his creativity to the role and hence, wanted to give him room to “evolve”. It helped them both to be more explorative and innovative on the set.

McMahon expounded that Cage was extremely “energetic” on the set, and that is why he loved working with him. They kept throwing ideas at one another, which made the atmosphere quite fun.

After Longlegs, will Nicolas Cage outdo himself in The Surfer?

We have seen Cage do what he is best at: being a maniac. Recently, he played the role of a diabolical and terrifying serial killer, Dale ‘Longlegs’ Cobble. He puts an immense scare to his role where a lot of credit also goes to the eerie prosthetics, his pale white face and the strange husky voice that added depth to his character.

The Surfer demands a similar thrilling maniacal role from Nicolas Cage apparently. The surfer gets embarrassed in front of his son, and full of revenge and anger, Cage declares war on the beach.

The level of lunatic laughs that we see in the trailer gives similar creeps to the Longlegs villain. It is anticipated that Cage will give a different side of the unsettling tension as was seen in his troubling character in Osgood PerkinsLonglegs

Moreover, The Surfer gives a cult-like feel, just as in Midsommar, where beautiful sceneries become a life of hell for the protagonist. The same holds true for Nicolas Cage.

The gigantic golden beaches become a claustrophobic Mordor that he finds inescapable.

When is The Surfer releasing?

The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 in the Midnight section, where Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions acquired its rights in North America.

The psychological thriller got a six-minute standing ovation at Cannes last year, and then it went on to make its way to the Glasgow Film Festival 2025, where it earned equal appreciation.

It is expected to be released on May 2, 2025.
