Robert Eggers is planning to haunt the Christmas holidays and bring his signature darkness to a classic story. A chilling take on A Christmas Carol is confirmed!
In his bold reinterpretation, Robert Eggers reimagines A Christmas Carol, where he would be working with myth and horror at the same time. Here is what we know so far about the Christmas chronicle.
Plot details of A Christmas Carol adaptation
Originally authored by Charles Dickens, the story has been adapted several times before, including Scrooge (1951), A Christmas Carol (1938), Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), The Muppet’s Christmas Carol (1992), and A Christmas Carol of 2009.
Several of them are musical, animated, and live-action adaptations, but none of them have been scary. How Robert Eggers will transform the traditional story of an old, miserly businessman known as Ebenezer Scrooge who views Christmas as a waste of time into solemnly evil is a film worth waiting for.
Do not forget, three spirits in the story remind him that his ways of thinking are not decent. Eggers could make use of this plot twist and bring up something spooky.
The film is written and directed by Robert Eggers himself. Chris Columbus and Elenor Columbus (Nosferatu) are beside him to take care of the production side.
Eggers’ liking for Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe has been in Eggers’ last three films: The Lighthouse (2019), The Northman (2022) and Nosferatu (2024). His potential to play Scrooge is evident from his facial similarity with the character. Dickens described Scrooge in his novel as someone with “pointed nose” and “old features”, Dafoe seems a great choice for the role.
As per Deadline, although Willem Dafoe has not been contacted for any further discussion on his final casting, but he has been on Eggers’ mind since he fits perfectly well with the character description based on what Eggers has in mind for the twisted Christmas tale.

How will horror change when Robert Eggers reimagines A Christmas Carol for today’s audience?
Hollywood is into retelling of classic stories with a new twist by contemporary directors. For example, recent blockbuster from Robert Eggers- Nosferatu– is a reiteration of 1922’s German silent film of the same name. Its story is inspired from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.
Next is the upcoming Guillermo del Toro’s restatement of Mary Shelly’s 1818 novel Frankenstein. The trailer has already proven that del Toro’s dark touch with more convincing Gothic-style visuals will make the story more riveting.
By looking at the previous work of Robert Eggers, particularly with the collaborations with Willem Dafoe, we can speculate Scrooge’s transformation into a formidable figure within a gothic and unnerving world.
Specific plot details are scarce, but keeping in mind the directorial elements Eggers usually plays with, a blend of historical authenticity and supernatural constituents is bound to be explored.
Talking about what the audience expects from a Christmas legend regenerated into a spine-chilling story from Robert Eggers, today’s horror audience does gravitate toward more explicit horror content.
Long-time horror fans have now been desensitized to traditional scares and seek more intense graphic content. Just like in Final Destination: Bloodlines where death became playful with its genuinely shocking death plots, appearing to be truly gruesome.
Brutal horror realism is another trend that Eggers might take advantage of in A Christmas Carol. Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019) are a few brilliant examples that gave psychological depth with disturbing visuals. Horror fans hailed the visceral intensity that kept the characters’ emotional bar high.
Genre-blending expectations could do the trick too. Robert Eggers is already famous for this tactic as he frequently combines folklore, historical fiction, and horror terrifically. He goes beyond psychological and societal aspects of horror by adding human struggles with supernatural forces, which would be a great directorial aspect that we look forward to in A Christmas Carol.
When is Robert Eggers’ A Christmas Carol releasing?
No confirmation for A Christmas Carol’s release date has been made. Meanwhile, Robert Eggers is working on his Nosferatu follow-up flick, Werwulf for Focus Features. Werwulf is Eggers’ ‘darkest thing he has ever written’. He plans to shoot for the feature film later this year.
