Shrek 5 Teaser Reveals Zendaya as Shrek’s Daughter, And Fans Are Divisive!

Shrek 5 teaser just dropped, and the internet was head over heels when they saw their beloved green ogre on the screen again. However, they couldn’t contain their happiness for more than two seconds when they observed what was happening.

DreamWorks’ announcement had to face backlash and hilarious memes since the teaser did not work well, and the excitement was instantly drained. There is a serious redesign needed, the fans suggested.

Shrek 5 teaser: A breakdown

Mainly, the teaser was a ‘cast announcement’ where Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the new addition, their daughter Felicia, were seen together. The teaser was a meme-show-off itself, as the mirror they are standing in front of shows them weird TikTok memes.

In one of them, Shrek is seen Godzilla-like but with a suit. Pinnochio admits that he is the creator of the memes.

And ta-da! The cast announcement teaser makes sure to disclose that Zendaya is doing the voiceover for Felicia. NBC Connecticut reported that Zendaya had watched Shrek “too often” in her adulthood.

The remaining cast is the same: Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Mike Meyers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cody Cameron as Pinnochio.

Here’s the teaser:

Hold on! The teaser does not show Puss in Boots. Strangely, we don’t get a glimpse of Antonio Banderas. Is he out of the cast? We don’t know yet. Maybe he is planning a cameo?

After giving us two Puss in Boots movies, he can’t vanish just like that. Maybe he is up for a surprise, but these are only guesses. The reality will be unveiled once the film is released.

What is Shrek 5 teaser backlash about?

As we said, netizens can’t handle it. They have witnessed some disastrous changes, as they put it, that make fun of the character itself.

Shrek has embedded great memories in the minds of those who watched it for the first time in 2001. Of course, Shrek contains nostalgic properties for them.

One of the comments on Instagram inserted several puking emojis on the post, while the other said,

“Better not turn Shrek into a black lesbian.”

Another fan on X was worried whether the Shrek animation is an ’AI interpretation.’

As per IGN, the Sonic movie did not hold back to comment on the teaser via a self-deprecating video on TikTok. The video said, “For any green ogres looking for advice,” along with showing Sonic’s shocked face.

The backlash on the internet is a direct gunfire on viewers’ nostalgia, and social media is the best way for fans to put their hearts out. A piece of their memory is twisted and altered, which is like damaging their childhood.

Creating a new sequel is like carefully playing with such audiences’ nostalgia and sometimes even taking advantage of it. Crafting something entirely new while staying true to its identity is a tricky business, which very few franchises have been able to pull off.

In Shrek 5’s example, the case of negative use of nostalgia is present. It has emerged as a ‘betrayal’ for the fans as it apparently went far away from the original brand.

However, fans are clever. They have found a solution. Head to the internet, make aggressive use of social media, punch in comments in the section underneath, crack jokes, and even create an entertaining pile of memes for bombardment.

Some serious concerns over Zendaya’s role

According to Them, a theory suggests that Zendaya might be Shrek’s transgender daughter. In Shrek The Third, Shrek and Fiona have three children, and one of them is a girl.

Almost two decades later, Felicia, of course, would have grown up, and this is the role that Zendaya is selected for in Shrek 5

Their names were Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia. A few eagle-eyed X users have noticed that she had blue eyes, while Shrek 5’s teaser shows brown-eyed Felicia. Although it is common for babies to change their eye colors from blue to brown, and the Shrek director hasn’t even confirmed the fact, it could be an animation mistake.

This is a speculation based on current information, and official sources haven’t confirmed it. We still need to wait and see what the final movie release brings upon us.

Insights from animation experts

In the 27-second clip, the grown-up children on the internet have gone crazy. The criticism is mainly due to the different facial features that fans have noticed.

Oli Hyatt from Blue Zoo Animation told BBC elucidated that such an instant reaction comes when the ‘nostalgic properties’ of childhood are mutated. It is immediately deemed as a disrespect to the original content.

Hyatt said,

“The generation of children that watched Shrek back [when it was first released in 2001] are now adults. There’s usually a feeling of ‘this isn’t what I knew’.”

He was of the view that much hasn’t changed in the new teaser trailer since it is nothing but “the advancement in technology”.

With a bit of altered vibrancy, colors, and realism, the original art style stays unharmed, which is a proof that animation technology is improving. It also implies that with a lower budget and better technology, now you can produce something bigger that produces quality with tweaks here and there.

It certainly requires a bit of intelligence regarding its usage. Sonic learned its lesson, and now mocking Shrek 5’s teaser is ironic.

How teasers nowadays are making use of these comments

It seems that it has become a newborn trend that makers of films and series now capitalize on social media. Which is a good thing because why not?!

It helps them get an initial idea of how the audience would respond, and while a majority of fans have laser-focused eyes, they tend to comment on the ins and outs of the teaser or trailer, which helps the makers to make changes before the final release.

The same process was recently utilized by James Gunn after the Superman trailer as he confirmed that the film went through test screenings followed by the trailer and viewers’ reactions, via World of Reel. The changes and reshoots are minor, and learning is a constant filmmaking process, Gunn’s statement remains valid for the Sonic’s changes as well.

Shrek 5 is slated for release on Christmas 2026. It means the makers still have plenty of time to rework things after fans found the new Shrek egregious.
