The DC Universe is taking shape, and it is more complex than anyone could have ever imagined. After enjoying the unmatched success of James Gunn’s DC reboot with Superman (2025), the DC Studios head has big plans for the franchise’s total makeover.
James Gunn has recently revealed details of Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow’s cast, story, and release date. Let’s take a deeper look.
Minor teases of Man of Tomorrow’s storyline
Several Instagram posts have been hinting at the upcoming Superman sequel, officially titled “Man of Tomorrow”. As per Polygon, Gunn has been teasing here and there about the upcoming Superman film, but he explained that it is not a direct sequel.
Man of Tomorrow cannot be considered as “Superman 2” because, although it continues the Superman saga, it takes the story in a new direction rather than acting as a direct continuation of the previous film.
James Gunn spilled the beans that the story is planned for a release two years after Superman (2025) and involves a partnership of Superman and Lex Luthor “against a much, much bigger threat”.
He said,
“It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.” [Source]
Gunn was happy to work with Nicholas Hault, and somewhat relates to the character of Lex, per Variety. Gunn told that he loved the script and wanted to work with the two extraordinary men again.
What does Man of Tomorrow story tease imply?
The storyline sheds light on the relationship between the two main characters. From what we understand from the Instagram posts by James Gunn and David Corenswet, it could be a hero-versus-villain story.
However, as Gunn elucidated that they might have to make an alliance against something bigger, the story will surely be complicated. It is not a one-dimensional narrative where we are served with a protagonist fighting the antagonist.
Also, we might get a glimpse of Luthor wearing his warsuit again. The Instagram post showed a comic picture of Superman standing beside Lex Luthor wearing the same suit, which definitely shows that Luthor is up to something big.
Since Lex Luthor is the personification of the vision that humans could be more than willpower and genius plans, he wants humans to become weapons, strong enough to fight aliens. Wearing his own alien battlesuit is another big clue coming from the comic image in the Instagram post that we look forward to.

It was evident in Superman (2025) that he made metahumans taking orders with certain codes, along with a clone of Superman himself. There could be a reason that Corenswet’s Superman might want to collaborate with Luthor to achieve maniacal ambitions, which highlights that the threat is surely going to be massive.
It might show a character arc, even a story arc, which we are not ready for yet. Character depth and complexity are an inevitable part of the process with a new direction approach by James Gunn for Man of Tomorrow.
It will be a rare sight to see an iconic rivalry turning into a fresh and exciting path in the new DC verse.
Core cast members of Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow
David Corenswet will continue to play Superman, while Nicholas Hoult is confirmed to return as Lex Luthor.
The female cast of the film has not been locked in yet. And we still don’t know whether we will be able to see Supergirl again in the Superman movie or not.
Since Supergirl will be released one year after Superman (2025) and the next instalment will be seen in the shape of Man of Tomorrow, Supergirl might have a powerful role in connecting both parts. But these are only speculations. There is no official news from the sources yet.
When is Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow releasing?
Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow has set the release date for July 9, 2027, with production set to begin in 2026. James Gunn broke the news through his official Instagram account.
Man of Tomorrow is slated for release soon after Supergirl (2026), who was teased in the mid-credits scene of Superman (2025).
Moreover, DC Studios has an accelerated release schedule for Supergirl, Clayface (September 2026), and Man of Tomorrow, aiming to release before Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which has a current opening date set as October 1, 2027.
