The highly anticipated film adaptation of a best-selling novel is finally arriving in theatres. How much more thrilling could it be with such a brilliant cast?
Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid trailer is trying to be hush-hush about a secret that is not to be disclosed until a dangerous game with Amanda Seyfried is over. Here’s what we know so far.
Plot details of The Housemaid (2025)
Based on Frieda McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name, The Housemaid tells the story of two prominent women: Millie (played by Sydney Sweeney) and Nina (Amanda Seyfried).
Millie takes a job at Nina’s luxurious home — she’s desperate, and the offer seems too good to pass up:
- High pay
- A beautiful, spacious home
- And an unexpectedly attractive husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar)
But good things always come with a cost. The wealthy couple has dicey secrets that Millie wants to uncover despite the gardener, Enzo’s (Michele Morrone) warning.

Director’s vision for the film
The director, Paul Feig, opened up about his new film, as he has always been known for thrillers mixed with comedy, such as Another Simple Favour (2025). As per The Hollywood Reporter, he said,
“Tension and scares and comedy are so wrapped together.” [Source]
People may approach The Housemaid with skepticism after Feig’s Another Simple Favour got mixed reviews. But as his upcoming thriller film oscillates between horror and melodrama with a strong cast and McFadden’s magnificent writing, the promise of a superb movie might stay intact, as the trailer suggests.
Is Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid trailer the victim or the villain?
Sydney Sweeney admitted that she is an avid book reader and she has read The Housemaid trilogy in one week. She could not stop praising McFadden’s storytelling magnificence and is now thoroughly excited for the film.
From the film’s trailer, it is difficult to determine whether Sydney Sweeney will be a victim or the villain, as the images have blurred the line between the two. Sweeney’s Millie is someone who has a troubled past. We don’t know the details yet, but for someone who has read the book, they surely know it.
She is here to take the job for a fresh start, oblivious to the fact that the wealthy Winchester house holds dark secrets. However, she seems dark herself.
For example, there is one scene in the trailer where Millie is waving goodbye to Nina, but as soon as she drives away, she drops her smile, throws her glasses away, and changes her face all of a sudden. This hints at Sweeney’s Millie being a villain.
On the other hand, there are flashes in the trailer that suggest that Millie might be a victim. For example, she is covered in blood at one point. She is screaming helplessly, possibly for help.
Millie appears to be a complex character rather than being either of the two. It all trickles down to mind-boggling writing by McFadden. The story will lead us to consider who is more dangerous: Millie, Nina, or perhaps someone entirely different?
