Ben Affleck’s The Accountant first rolled out in 2016 and it has been nine years that fans have been waiting for a sequel. The sequel became mandatory after the first installment earned $155 million at the box office back then.
The Accountant 2 is back with next month’s release date. Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant, will be back on the screen to uphold the same reputation that it had years ago. And we are thrilled!
The Accountant 2 plot details
An old acquaintance is murdered and Christian Wolff (played by Ben Affleck) is asked to help since he is adept at solving complex problems. Wolff is even convinced more to do as he sees the cryptic message “find the accountant”.
He knows immediately that extreme measures need to be taken. That is when he recruits his estranged brother, Brax (played by Jon Bernthal), for a partnership on the case.
In collaboration with US Treasury Deputy Director, Marybeth Medina (played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they get themselves digging deep into a deadly conspiracy in which targeting ruthless killers becomes obligatory.
Both brothers have complications but they are ready to unmask the deep-buried secrets as they become unstoppable. Watch the trailer here:
What was Gavin O’Connor’s vision for The Accountant 2?
Gavin O’Connor was the director of The Accountant and is now coming with its sequel. He knew that he would tap into something different this time, according to Screen Rant. The Accountant didn’t fit well with some critics, O’Connor told Screen Rant, but he was confident about its plot as he explained that a simple plot would have been a piece of cake for Christian Wolff.
Christian Wolff was extraordinary and he needed to be portrayed as one. That is why there was a need to create complexity in the plot and bring Wolff in.
O’Connor said that he had no plans to rebuild the same story as he wanted to do something fresh. He told,
“I wanted to build off the first one, but very much wanted to refresh the tank, do something very different, and create something new.” [Source]
For that matter, he was clear on one thing. The plot, which O’Connor and the writer, Bill Dubuque, crafted together, was to highlight human trafficking. He wanted to emphasize this matter and therefore, felt the need to highlight the subject matter.
The brotherly relation of Chris and Brax is the plot’s marrow
O’Connor revealed another interesting insight that Chris and Brax are the core of the film’s storyline. The deeper relationship between the two detached brothers will be interesting to watch but it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.
The director disclosed that the plot and scene direction both had complications “because it was a bit of a tonal tight walk”. Taking these three elements side by side- human trafficking, separated brothers, and a fun-tone film- wasn’t an easy job, he professed.

The brothers are looking to make a human connection and are on an emotional quest for love themselves while solving the case. The movie takes turns smoothly when things are happening simultaneously, the director expanded. Their expression of understanding for each other gives the puzzle-like plot more flush as needed.
Jon Bernthal is great at what he does, the director extolled
O’Connor commended the work ethics of Job Bernthal as “he’s the hardest working actor”. The actor has an athletic background and based on the director’s interview, he was really “scientific” about the action scenes.
He cited Bernthal is entirely committed to his work as he is in love with what he does, as of course, he is good at it. His mere presence elevated the feel of action scenes that helped in building the character, O’Connor admitted.
It was a genetic action and this is where Bernthal assisted in pushing the character in the right direction.
Ben Affleck on working in The Accountant 2
First of all, we must tell you that O’Connor couldn’t stop praising Ben Affleck as he had worked with him in The Accountant previously. As Affleck reprised his role of the math wizard-cum-sharpshooter and gave us math for mathing again, Bernthal admired Ben with great respect.
He confessed that Ben is as great a person as an actor. It was easy working with him as usually, Bernthal feels working in films is a challenge, but being with Ben, it was all much smoother and easier, Variety reported.
On the other hand, Ben Affleck was happy with having worked in the film again as the famous autistic criminal whiz but incited a roar of laughter and applause when he talked about his scene where he had practiced line dancing for months, as per Variety. Here’s the first look:

Moreover, the film is special on another level. Just like Christian Wolff, there are other autistic actors in the cast. The producer told that casting such people brought diversity to the filmmaking process as they come “with their own individual stories that make the characters richer”.
One such actor is Allison Robertson who debuted a feature film with the role of Justine. The ‘lived’ experiences of these actors give depth to the film which the filmmakers wouldn’t have done on their own.
Some hints on Pineda’s role as antagonist
While talking to Collider, O’Connor and Daniella Pineda unveiled that Anais’s villainous character is the “ignition of the plot”. She is the story’s mystery but an extremely intelligent and dangerous lady.
We believe the director wanted to build a character that should match the charisma of Christain Wolff. Thus, bringing Anais in such a powerful portrayal makes sense.
They mentioned that they couldn’t reveal much about her role and significance in the story, but there are numerous “landmines” that the audience is to see for themselves exploding here and there.
