The Accountant 2 Review- A Sequel That Earned A Better RT Score Than Its Predecessor

Almost a decade later, The Accountant 2 is back with a bang! The sequel has been able to gain pretty decent ratings and reviews right after its theatrical premiere. Christian Wolff, played by Ben Affleck, has proved it again.

Here is our version of The Accountant 2 review, which will help you decide whether to skip it or go grab a ticket as soon as you can! Is it worth watching? Find it out here.

The Accountant 2 plot details

In our previous article, we gave an overview of the plot of The Accountant 2. Still, for revisiting purposes, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is asked to help with a murder case as he is an expert at solving knotty problems.

Wolff finds himself more interested in the specific case when he sees the cryptic message “find the accountant”. He knows there is someone who knows him, and that is where his estranged brother plays his part.

His brother, Braxton (Jon Bernthal), becomes his partner for the mission. With the help of the US Treasury Deputy Director, they unfold the deadly mystery that involves a serious conspiracy.

The complications of brotherhood are evident, but they are ready to work together, becoming an unstoppable force. Watch the trailer here:

Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s performances

The Accountant (2016) had that 80s feel, which the actors still continue to demonstrate in this part. Although the film takes place eight years after where the first part left off, Ben Affleck is still the macho man with the brain.

The brotherly pair, including Jon Brethal, becomes a likable combo with fantastic chemistry. Though the story’s narrative does not show their closeness the sibling dynamic with a love-hate relationship clearly exists.

The first part emphasized more on Affleck’s character’s struggles with his condition and troubled childhood, but this time, it was more about the brothers’ relationship. Both Affleck and Bernthal gave their best for the complicated brotherly relationship that fit so well with the entire film’s plot.

In fact, the best scene of the film was when they first met after almost ten years, and they exchanged harsh words. They fit together comfortably despite the repel, and there seemed no need to turn back to the details, just like in the first part.

The story went forward smoothly, blending well with the logic of the narrative due to these two charismatic leads. That looked natural and sweet at the same time, depicting the true nature of estrangement, brotherly protests, and subtle but unmistakable care.

The Accountant 2 box office earnings

Based on The Numbers, the domestic box office earnings of The Accountant 2 are $24,492,743, and the international box office is $1,914,616. It made a total of $26,407,359 at the worldwide box office at the time of writing.

What do critics add to The Accountant 2 review?

The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes gave a positive review of the film. It said,

“Improving on the original by leaning into Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s buddy comedy chemistry, The Accountant 2 can safely be filed under a good time at the movies.” [Source]

The overall critics’ response is heartwarming since they enjoyed the mix of comedy and action, where the actual plot of the film, fortunately, did not take a backseat. The level of silliness is wholeheartedly acceptable with some pristine action.

Fans reaction

No one is happier than the fans this time. They wanted it just the way a sequel should be. One of the fans’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes cited that more characters were given a “chance to breathe” and the relationship between the brothers was shown in more depth.

The ideal match of action and comedy was “brilliant” and they didn’t find any boring moment, showing different perspectives of the two brothers, which kept the essence of a sequel alive.

Is it worth watching?

It certainly is. The director surely wanted to keep the brother buddy comedy alive while shedding light on the serious conspiracy about human trafficking, too. The balance between the two seemed adequate; it did not take the story off the track.

The minuscule details of the brotherly bond are captivating, as there is a slow building of the relationship that wasn’t deep during the ten-year gap when the brothers didn’t meet. Especially in the bar scene where Wolff is seen struggling to get the hang of the dance, and Brax is seen rooting for him.

Brax was even hyped for Wolff at one point when he said to others sitting at the table next to him, “That’s my big brother up there!” It was a beautiful momentum-gaining scene between the brothers who were proud of each other till the end of the film.

The emotional capture of the film is high due to this very reason that keeps us intrigued throughout. Nevertheless, the real mystery of the film stays intact, not getting too carried away with the sentiments. Hence, a clever balance.
