Vampires like Nosferatu ruled last year’s films, but this year, Frankenstein’s monsters seem to be captivating audiences onscreen.
Alongside Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix version of Frankenstein (2025), Christian Bale is ready to portray his monster in another wicked romance story. The Bride trailer has Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, who is looking for his true bride.
Plot details of The Bride (2026)
Directed by Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride (2026) is inspired by James Whale’s 1935 film “Bride of Frankenstein”. It was based on the 1818 Frankenstein novel.
As per Los Angeles Times, it is set in the Great Depression era, where Frankenstein’s monster (played by Christian Bale) is looking for his life companion. He recruits Dr. Euphronius (portrayed by Annette Bening) to resurrect a murdered young woman (played by Jessie Buckley) within the city as his undead soulmate.
What happens next in the trailer is the mayhem and chaos afterwards. It is a romance mixed with wild and social movement, getting direct attention from the police, and, of course, with an ignition of romance.
Warner Bros. released the teaser trailer for The Bride (2026). Have a look:
Director’s vision for the film
The Bride! (original name has an exclamation mark) is the second directorial effort from Maggie Gyllenhaal after 2021’s “The Lost Daughter,” which managed to grab three Academy Award nominations, with Buckley and Peter Sarsgaard in the cast. Sarsgaard is playing the detective in The Bride! now.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s fresh take on Frankenstein’s bride seems to be a rebellious reimagination of the iconic film from 1980s, which gained critics’ praise back then.
She is eager to take the tale forward with a rock take on the bride, showing Frankenstein’s monster and his bride as the two outlaws in 1930s Chicago movement as a backdrop.
It seems to be a clever amalgamation of horror, possession, craving for companionship, murder, and radical dark cultural as well as social movements. It appears as if the bride will be the creation transforming into some sort of heroic undertaking to sweep the nonconformists.
Moreover, the film is rumored to be a musical feature, but the clarification has not been made yet. It is likely that with the final trailer, we will get to know more details.
The Bride trailer has Christian Bale- How does he portray the Frankenstein monster differently?
Although from the trailer we infer that Christian Bale and his bride will be the central characters, speaking for their own complexities and emotional arc within the narrative, we are confused whether Bale will be overshadowed by his bride’s character or not.
The film’s name is the titular character played by Buckley, who seems to be the representation of a social rejection and is forced to forge her own path through rebellion.
Still, the trailer shows Bale as a different Frankenstein monster. It does not seem to copy del Toro’s Frankenstein monster in any way, as that was only meant to scare people. Rather, Bale’s monster aims to re-interpret the classic version with a notably different tone and aesthetic. Thanks to Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Seeing her previous work, we know Maggie Gyllenhaal likes to present bold and bizarre directorial versions of her stories. It implies that Christian Bale will give a modern and twisty touch to the classic story, with some of his crazy highlights from the film Psycho (2000).
Bale’s visual style, with his traditional scars and stitches over his face, gives a layered punk-inflected aesthetic matching perfectly with the story’s grit. A more ruthlessly obsessive side of Bale will be seen as he is noticed protecting his bride, even if it means being willing to kill.
When compared to the classic interpretations of Frankenstein’s monster, Bale is expected to humanize the character more. The gothic feel remains there, but with a sympathetic touch, or possibly heroic.
