Plot details of The Fantastic Four: First Steps
As The Fantastic 4 trailer reveals, the first Marvel family is getting a new beginning, showing Sue Storm and Reed Richards are expecting a baby. It could be the literal meaning behind the film’s title.
The official synopsis of the film indicates that the family of four is compelled to retain their bond while defending the Earth from a space god called Galactus.
His message is brought to Earth by the Silver Surfer, his enigmatic Herald, who has certified the doom of the planet Earth. However, the Fantastic Four confesses that they are the defenders of the Earth.

What does the title “First Steps” signify?
As mentioned above, the beginning of a new chapter in the family of four might be one angle from which the title gets its direction. According to IGN, it is a fresh start for the franchise as it is Marvel’s first family that helped Marvel enter a new era.

Who is the new Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four trailer?
The Fantastic Four 2025 trailer now shows the Silver Surfer as a female, which originally was a male. The role of Shalla-Bal’s Surfer is played by Julia Garner, who appeared previously in Ozark (2017-2022) and The Wolf Man (2025).
Why is the Silver Surfer a girl this time?
As per The Direct, despite being a direct deviation from the iconic male version of Silver Surfer, the female Surfer has been part of the Marvel comics since 1968. Shalla-Bal was the actual love interest of the Silver Surfer, she has become the Surfer herself in various comics.
The implications are limitless as to why a female Silver Surfer is shown in the trailer. Marvel Comics showed Norrin Radd as the Silver Surfer, who bargained for the safety of his planet Zenn-La with the space god Galactus.
The unsated nature of the cosmic threat, Galactus to consume the planets had to be curbed down for which Radd sacrificed himself to be transformed as the Silver Surfer. While actual Radd stayed behind to lead Zenn-La, it is his love interest, Shalla-Bal, as the Silver Surfer this time, to bring other worlds back for their insatiable master.
Since Marvel Comics shows both male and female Silver Surfers numerous times, this story could have a special meaning in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, too.
The entire story of a female Silver Surfer has not been teased in the trailer, which we assume will be unveiled with the final premiere of the film, with a darker and more mature tone. Even the plans for Earth’s doom by Galactus and the Silver Surfer, the first antagonist of First Steps, are not clear yet.
Difference between Marvel Studios and DC Studios superhero stories?
Some viewers might be confused about how the stories of DC Studios and Marvel Comics are different. Firstly, they both are distinct entities that have their own version of superhero stories, which fans have been enjoying for decades.
James Gunn, the new DC Studios co-head, clarified the difference between DC Studios and Marvel Comics versions of stories. James Gunn, the new Superman: Legacy director, explained,
