The Long Walk Trailer Shows One Simple Rule for Survival

And the rule is: walk or die. Stephen King’s movie adaptation is coming to life under Francis Lawrence’s directorial expertise. The 1979 novel was of the same name under King’s pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

Lionsgate has a number of films scheduled for this year, and The Long Walk is one of them. The post unfolds The Long Walk trailer and release date details that have already incited some serious chills among the audience.

Plot details of The Long Walk

The film is set in a dystopian near future that shows a group of teen boys set on a titular annual contest that will only end with one survivor. The rule is clear: just walk or die. Whoever stops will have to face a gunshot death by the military troops walking alongside the boys in the long walk.

Three warnings will be given if any of them stops walking. Even after a third warning, the boy does not stand up, he is killed right there.

The trailer moves smoothly when the same group of boys, including a stellar cast, is shown walking with a happy pep talk with each other. The trailer takes a dark turn as soon as one of the boys stops, and he is killed without any delay.

The trailer goes on to show higher levels of horror, with deformed foot and screaming boys that test their stamina to the core. One thing is clarified from the very beginning- there is no finish line.

Stephen King’s novel adaptation highlights the very essence of human nature- longing for belonging, brotherhood, friendship, and then a disconnection of an emotional bond as soon as someone dies.

Director’s vision for the film

Francis Lawrence has been into dystopian thrillers, especially those that involve kids. Every Hunger Games sequel was helmed by Lawrence, along with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Before he starts with his next venture in the Hunger Games sequel, Lawrence takes control of The Long Walk, which shows bits and pieces of young people suffering, just like Hunger Games, but a little more ruthlessly.

While talking to IGN, Lawrence told that the film was shot chronologically, and it was something that he had never gotten a chance to do before. The film is all about walking, and each day the cast met for another day of walking.

He explained,

“They all meet each other, and once they start walking, every day, the location changes, and you’re in a new scene. And so we could choose chronologically… I have to really focus on the characters and what the characters are going through physically, psychologically, emotionally with one another.” [Source]

The director also mentioned that the weather played a major role in shooting scenes each day. If the scenes were to be filmed in the rain, it would have another emotional value attached to it. If it was foggy, sunny, or extremely hot, all these things added to the emotional value of the distinct scenes.

It was a challenge to film them while the boys were constantly walking, but the director ensured that he needed to be “anchored” with them while doing so. It gave the director and the cameraman a chance to take a handful of angles for all the scenes that conveyed the real emotional depth of the sequence.

Lawrence gave highlights of the real sufferings of the cast when they had to walk three-quarters of a mile each day. Initially, they were excited about the idea of walking throughout the film, but once the shooting started, they were terrified about what they had gotten themselves into?!

They had sore feet, sunburns, and many of them lost weight. However, all of these factors have a real feel to the film, and Lawrence felt that “it was pretty incredible”.

About casting Mark Hamill

The Star Wars hero Mark Hamill is now a cast member of The Long Walk, mainly as a villain here. He had given voice to various villain roles before, such as Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Hobgoblin in the Marvel universe, and Chucky in Child’s Play.

Lawrence loved his voice acting skills and knew that his dialect would give the tone and feel to the character, fitting just right with the antagonist’s barbarity in The Long Walk. The director thought that Hamill is someone who not only sounds ‘official’ military but also evokes a sense of dread with various ‘gravitas’ attached to his role.

Will The Long Walk trailer spark a new wave of dystopian films?

Films that show the survival of humans in different circumstances, such as The Matrix, show a future world where humans are enslaved by machines. Human identities could become doubtful.

Such films instigate our brains to imagine where society could be going if such were the circumstances. Social and political issues are highlighted with captivating stories of struggles and how individuals overcome them.

Blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion is what these dystopian movies allow us to do, so that we are left to determine for ourselves what experience it would be if our identities shift.

The same is expected from The Long Walk trailer, as it takes us to the world where military control is unavoidable and we have to survive the game, no matter what the rules. A hefty amount of money awaits the winner at the cost of what?

This year has been the year of King’s film adaptations, such as The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, and The Running Man, but this latest King-inspired horror film promises a fresh intensity in King and Lawrence’s storytelling legacy.
