There is something special about Christopher Nolan, and we are here for it. From the moment news of his thirteenth feature film began to surface, fans went into a frenzy—because when Nolan’s name is attached, it’s a guarantee that something monumental is on the way.
Finally, Universal Pictures has released The Odyssey trailer, Nolan’s new historical epic, which appears gigantic from the very first look.
Plot details of The Odyssey (2026)
Based on Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey is about a legendary Greek hero, Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), who embarks on a decade-spanning journey home to his wife. He has to travel back to Ithaca after the Trojan war, overcoming treacherous trails and confronting mythical beings like Sirens, Circe, and Cyclops Polyphemus.
Odysseus was famous for his intellect, and the trailer appears to be an account of his detailed adventure when he comes back to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). Have a look at the trailer:
Nolan’s epic masterpiece in the making
The Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Oppenheimer (2023), which earned the Best Picture Oscar, has a larger-than-life kind of directorial style. If we have a look at his previous films like The Dark Knight (2008) and Dunkirk (2017), Nolan has a track record for crafting visually ambitious projects.
For this very reason, he makes minimal use of CGI, which stands true for The Odyssey as well. His use of a mechanical puppet to portray Polyphemus is proof that he brings an authentic texture to the film with his real-world on-location filming.
Known for taking bold, creative risks, Nolan is now raising the stakes with a massive $250 million budget behind The Odyssey. Positioned as one of next year’s biggest films, the project places enormous responsibility on his shoulders—to deliver a picture-perfect spectacle with the grand, visionary scale audiences rightfully expect.
In his interview with Empire magazine, Nolan disclosed some details about his 91-day shoot. He said,
“We shot over two million feet of film…I’ve been out on it for the last four months. We got the cast who play the crew of Odysseus’ ship out there on the real waves, in the real places…We really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people.” [Source]
He continued to explain that he wanted to keep it as real as possible. It was a learning experience for him as well, as he got the opportunity to confront the world that keeps pushing back at you daily, he disclosed.
What do we see in The Odyssey trailer?
US viewers who watched Avatar: Fire and Ash report watching The Odyssey trailer with a theatrical IMAX experience. Nolan sure knows how to make his films into a cinematic event, even before the release.
Already shot in IMAX, The Odyssey is one of the fantasy epics, Nolan corrected, that is unlike anything the director has made before. When the early photos of the film surfaced online, fans were quick to point out petty details that they felt didn’t truly depict a historical epic story like this.
Nolan elucidated that it is more of a “fantasy epic” and his design choices are entirely his choice of demonstrating a true period piece that favors mythic over the accurate. Hence, after watching the trailer, we understand how Nolan used his freedom to present an era-specific historical drama.
The trailer opens with a desert shot with several swords, helmets, and shields fallen on the ground. This shows Odysseus’s war successes and his confidence that, after battling countless enemies, he is determined to bring his men safely home.
The trailer goes on to show Odysseus walking through high and low lands, the forests, and shows wide angle beach shot where Odysseus and his men on the beach are struggling against the waves.
They face enemies, and we watch a short encounter with Polyphemus, a notable moment in Homer’s poem. The presence of Polyphemus is highly anticipated since Nolan revealed that he used a large 6x6m mechanical puppet to portray Cyclops Polyphemus.
His wife asks him to make a promise that he will come back, to which the Greek legends replied, “What if I can’t?”
We haven’t seen Zendaya or Robert Pattinson in the trailer yet, but that’s likely because the second, longer trailer for The Odyssey is saving their appearances for later.
