At last, Tom Cruise is receiving overdue praise for his groundbreaking stunt work, recognized by the Oscars at last. Thirty-five years after his initial nominations, he will finally be awarded his first Oscar, a long-awaited honor.
Tom Cruise getting Honorary Oscar marks a defining moment in Hollywood history, recognizing his decades-long impact on both blockbuster filmmaking and cinematic prowess.
He has been nominated four times for the Academy Awards but has never been able to bring home the black lady ever. Neither of his franchises, Top Gun and Mission Impossible, has been able to help him win the award.
The new Stunt Design category is not scheduled to begin until the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, which will honor films released in 2027. It was argued by many that Tom Cruise deserves the award; however, it would have been unfair if his stunt work in the Mission Impossible films had not been credited until 2028.
Cruise emerged as the most deserving recipient of the award, especially after his work in this year’s Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning (2025). His efforts for his latest film might have gone in vain until this announcement from the Academy Board itself had not come this year.
The Academy Board will present Tom Cruise with an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards on Sunday, November 16, 2025, for his commitment to stunts and filmmaking.
According to the Academy’s June Press release, four people will be given Academy Honorary Awards: Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, Wynn Thomas, and Dolly Parton. The Board of Governors announced that these individuals will be celebrated for their “extraordinary careers and commitment” that left a “lasting impact”.
The press release further explained,
“Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.” [Source]
Cruise has been performing his own high-risk stunts since his early days of his career, such as in Risky Business (1983), Top Gun (1986), and The Firm (1993). Without having relied on CGI or a body double, the jaw-dropping action scenes were all the work of this whole person himself.

Top 7 stunts that define Tom Cruise’s legacy
Some of his mind-boggling action stunts include:
- The Last Samurai (2003): A near-death experience during a horseback sword sequence, where his team thought his head would fly in the air.
- Ghost Protocol (2011): Scaling the world’s tallest building was one of Tom’s craziest stunts ever. Cruise stopped the director from having a harness or a stuntman for jumping from the 130th floor of the building [fainting].
- Rogue Nation (2015): Clinging to an ascending Airbus A400M gliding in the air 5,000 feet high was a clear-cut death trap.
- Fallout (2018): No one could have done the infamous HALO jump except Cruise. It took him 106 jumps for two weeks with meticulous planning and execution before actually being able to do it.
- Top Gun: Maverick (2022): The aerial stunt coordinator of this film explained that Cruise learned all the flight dynamics and daredevil stunts before moving the real plane smoothly.
- Dead Reckoning (2023): The scene where Cruise jumps off a motorcycle in mid-air while flying off a cliff is one of the stunts that the director didn’t know Cruise would be able to pull off with such brilliance.
- The Final Reckoning (2025): The soul-shaking view of Cruise diving into the depths of the sea to extract Podkova and then clinging to an airplane without any harness or safety leash (again), with uncontrollable air going into his eyes and mouth, was proof that he is a complete lunatic when it comes to original action stunts.
Why has Tom Cruise never won an Oscar?
There could be many reasons, but mentioning them all will only be speculation. It is possible that he lost in a competitive year for his nominated roles to other co-stars due to his leaning towards more commercially successful action films.
He was overshadowed by Dustin Hoffman’s performance in Rain Man (1988) despite getting high praise for his two roles: in Rain Man and Jerry Maguire (1996).
His choice of films, such as preferring more action films than dramatic and “arty” films, might not have given him the advantage of receiving an Oscar earlier.
The overall voting process in the Academy is complex and subjective, as factors like a film’s tone, the presence of other stronger performances, and personal preferences all play their part.
Tom Cruise getting Honorary Oscar — Long overdue or perfectly timed?

Since Tom Cruise has been a consistent box office powerhouse, the Honorary Oscar seems to be long overdue. His films have grossed billions worldwide, which has earned him the prestige of becoming a brand, and not just an actor.
Cruise stayed on top of his niche as he continuously kept reinventing himself and raised the bar of action cinema. All for the sake of audience immersion, he performed his own stunts, which shows a miraculous level of physical dedication rare among A-listers.
On the contrary, his career maturity matters when it comes to “perfect timing”. Cruise is now 60+, for which an Honorary Oscar feels like a natural career apex. The award is the well-earned recognition over the course of years, whose adeptness has shaped the modern cinema in tangible ways.
With the introduction of the new Best Stunts Design category in the Academy Awards, which took the makers three long decades to realize its importance, Cruise’s artistic merit will finally be recognised.
Do you think Cruise should have received this Oscar for a specific film instead? Do you agree with the Academy’s decision? Drop your thoughts!
