What to Watch in June 2025- The list of movies releasing this month
Ballerina– 6 June
Ballerina is a story about a girl, Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas), who wants to avenge his father’s death, for which she trains to be an assassin with a highly influential criminal organization, Ruska Roma. The training academy is led by the Director to become lethal.
The film is set between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, where Keanu Reeves is seen in a cameo role too. de Armas learned Gun-fu as balley, stylized to be graceful, yet lethal.
She is “not a female John Wick”, the director, Len Wiseman, clarified, as she has her own story, embedded in the Wick-verse. The chaotic fight scenes are choreographed in a way to portray emotional precision resonating well with brutality.
Straw– 6 June
Straw is a thriller drama that revolves around a single mother trapped in her own series of unfortunate events. She is constantly seen struggling for her ill daughter, Aria, and over time, her situation goes from bad to worse.
Tyler Perry’s new Netflix movie, Straw, is streaming crazily on online platform and getting praise for her jaw-dropping performance. The story is single-handedly carried by Perry (playing Janiyah Wiltkinson’s role) as she keeps facing one disaster after another in a single day. This becomes the “worst day of her life”.
You’d be surprised by the hallucinatory twist, leading to mental health issues. The cascade of misfortunes brings Janiyah down, reflecting upon the systemic failure, giving deeper meaning to the metaphor “final straw”.
Predator: Killer of the Killers– 6 June
The movie is a 2025 adult animated sci-fi action and horror anthology directed by Dan Trachtenberg, with the co-director Joshua Wassung. The story continues to show Predator warriors on Earth battling against humans across different countries and eras. It is a vivid demonstration of human “killers” becoming prey.
Four different time periods in which the titular alien race is engaged in finding the best warriors as a part of their hunt. The Viking woman, Ursa, is the most striking one who leads her clan for vengeance. A ninja and his Viking brother, along with a World War II pilot, are some of the powerful characters that are hunted by unique Yatija.
The movie is a prequel to originals Predator (1987) with three standalone segments showing unity by Predator conflict. The cross-era team fight is a sight to behold, unleashing warriors from different time periods, converging on Predator homeworld arena.
Echo Valley– 6 June
Kate Garrett (played by Julianne Moore) is the owner and trainer of horses in rural Pennysylvania, dealing with her own grief when her frightened daughter, Claire (played by Sydney Sweeney) shows up on her door.
The daughter is covered in blood and trembling with fear, and Kate is clueless. Claire is struggling with drug addiction and got herself out of the drug mess, which her boyfriend Ryan and Jackie were a part of too.
The story does not sound that simple when she gets back home, starts living with her mother, and engages happily with the horses. A drug debt blackmail and body disposal complicate things even more. Kate needs to do something to protect her daughter.
How to Train Your Dragon– 13 June
The live-action remake of the 2010 original animated film follows the same storyline. Hiccup (played by Mason Thames) is a young Viking boy who goes against the rules of his father, Chief Stoick (played by Gerard Butler). His father is the village leader and has been hunting dragons with his clan for years.
Hiccup is different. He feels that dragons and humans should be friends. He saves and tames Toothless, the feared Night Fury dragon, and becomes friends with him, with Astrid (played by Nico Parker) by his side.
The emotional impactful scene of their first flight is a visual narrative with cinematic CGI blend that proved a turning point of the live-action reimagining. Village transformation becomes evident, eventually making way for future peace but with an upcoming ancient threat.
The first reviews are already in, and The New York Times shared a positive one.
“This live-action remake of the 2010 animated film is religiously faithful to the original. The result is exhilarating at times, if somewhat mechanical.” [Source]
Materialists– 13 June
Materialists is a rom-com subversion that has an impressive star cast. Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a matchmaker based in New York City. He has a perception of dating with a lens of financials.
She finds it hard to decide between a wealthy suitor and her struggling actor ex-boyfriend. The sexual assault subplot is an interesting take on transactional relationships.
A traditional love triangle is seen, but with themes of love vs money, and people’s priorities for passion over stability, or vice versa. It is an A24 satire on emotional vs material choices with the commodification of love. The twist in the conventional genre and twisting it with an ethical reckoning in matchmaking is a fresh standpoint in the genre.
Elio- 20 June
Elio seems to be a fun animated feature film coming out on June 20. Elio is the titular 11-year-old boy (portrayed by Kibreab) who needs a friend. He accidentally gets abducted by the astronauts and unexpectedly finds a friend in the other world. It later turns out to be an intergalactic ambassador mistake. Oops!
His slug-like alien friend, Glordon, has a father who is preparing him for the destruction of the world. But Glordon does not like the idea. The tale highlights a self-acceptance journey, interpreting a cross-species empathy with intersection of themes of loneliness and grief.
With Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi direction, the trailer shows neon psychedelic visuals, giving an emotional slice-of-life from Pixar.
28 Years Later– 20 June
Twenty-three years after the original film’s groundbreaking success, 28 Years Later returns with another bold, boundary-pushing horror entry that seems ahead of its time. As the name suggests, the film is set 28 years after the virus struck the city, presenting us with a post-apocalyptic Britain.
This time, the non-infected ones are struggling against more evolved creatures that have grown stronger over the years. We will see Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is married to Isla (Jodie Comer), and they have a son named Spike. The family will be seen struggling to survive in the zombie-infested lands.
The new trilogy launch takes us to a new franchise experience with folk horror imagery, mainland collapse chaos and new zombie variants opposite to a cult survivor faction. Despite being a horror film, a family bond under duress is conspicuous, ending with a possible cliffhanger sequel setup.
Megan 2.0– 27 June
She is back with a bang! M3gan 2.0 is about the AI doll who is getting ready for a badder AI villain doll with an upgrade. Megan, the self-aware robot, has only one mission: to protect Gemma’s niece Cady.
In the last part, we saw Megan going bonkers to complete her mission, even if Gemma is coming in her way. Now, in this techno-horror sequel, the military android AI doll, Amelia, will not spare. But there is a confusion, an ethical AI dilemma.
Will Megan work with Amelia for a bigger plot, making an ally with her own kind, or is she actually on Gemma’s side to protect Cady? Does she really have an emotional AI bond or would play between autonomy vs control?
An evident AI takeover threat is part of almost every other movie in modern cinema. The campy horror action-filled movie with AI regulation themes has a PG-13 rating despite violent content.
F1 movie– 27 June
F1 is another star-studded film releasing alongside M3gan 2.0. Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) is a veteran Formula One driver who retired after a horrible crash. Three decades after the incident, Sonny decides to come back at his team’s insistence.
He teams up with a younger driver, Noah (Damson Idris), who is mentored by Sonny, considered an underdog of the F1 team. Since the film is all about Formula One racing, we can expect to see the brands all over the place.
The trailer only might not be able to do justice to the inside intensity, suspense and unavoidable stress that F1 drivers have to go through, which we are excited to watch once the full movie comes out. It certainly asks for IMAX cinema experience due to its high-octane visuals.
The real-life 1990s Silverstone near-death crash plays its part in F1 movie, with themes of mentorship, surrogate fatherhood, old-guard and tech rivalry. Hollywood is going to get a mainstream F1 immersion in a long time.
