The Resident Evil franchise made Milla Jovovich a star, but her name remains synonymous with the series only. Despite working in other action films, Milla Jovovich was unable to mark her spot the way the Resident Evil universe did for her.
And now, the Worldbreaker trailer shows Jovovich battling with strange monsters again. Can this film prove a turning point for her?
Plot details of Worldbreaker (2026)
As per Variety, the new sci-fi action film, Worldbreaker, is about a young girl, Willa (played by Billie Boullet), and her parents, a monster-killing mother (Jovovich) and a battle-scarred veteran father (Luke Evans), who protect their homeland from strange creatures called Breakers.
Willa joins the cause with her parents to safeguard the remote island as it becomes inevitable when the monsters reach their hometown, too. Watch the trailer to get a closer look:
Director’s vision for the film
The Machinist (2004) and The Call (2013) director, Brad Anderson, has taken up a new sci-fi thriller that aims to emphasize tension and personal stakes rather than depending on large-scale worldbuilding.
The sci-fi elements are evident and serve as an emotional conflict among the family members, and this is why fear emerges from this very notion. Worldbreaker trailer shows that the film will reside on the dramatic tension and emotional journey of the main characters, and this is what the director has been doing in his past work.
He has given theatrical thrillers with fantastic performances, especially in Worldbreaker, where a post-invasion world is created that faces existential threats. His directing style is often found similar to that of Paul W.S. Anderson that has a kinetic and visually driven action aesthetic.
This creature-feature genre film also seems to take inspiration from his directorial talent shown previously, setting a potentially darker tone.
Does the Worldbreaker trailer prove Milla Jovovich still has franchise power?
Milla Jovovich has found it difficult to replicate her Resident Evil success in other action roles recently. Various reasons contribute to this challenge, such as:
- Her strong association with the single character
- Other action films earned her mixed reactions from the critics and the fans
- The nature of projects, especially those related to her husband, director Paul W.S. Anderson
Take a look at her recent action films that gained disappointing ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.
| IMDb | Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score | |
| In The Lost Lands (2025) | 4.7 | 24 percent |
| Breathe (2024) | 4.3. | 14 percent |
| Monster Hunter (2020) | 5.2 | 44 percent |
There have been fewer female-led action films, and the industry dynamics did not allow her to position herself strongly, whereas it is the opposite for the male actors. Jason Statham, in his upcoming action film, Shelter, is compared to bigger names like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
She has been one of the most reliable action stars, but unfortunately, the right projects haven’t been coming her way, which has restricted her potential to only the Resident Evil franchise.
Despite being directed by the same director as Resident Evil, the magic in Anderson’s In the Lost Lands was lost in sloppy dialogue and an overload of special effects. Jovovich tried hard to make her physical performance count, but the final product didn’t come out as expected.
Milla Jovovich remains a talented and magnetic performer, yet many of her recent action projects have struggled to gain traction, mainly because of underdeveloped scripts. Visual style alone cannot carry a film; compelling character arcs and carefully built worlds are what truly resonate with today’s audiences.
